Remember the Hollow carbon shell thread?
I was wandering what would be the result of using fiberglass instead of carbon… Would you get a see throught board?
Would be interresting to see the flow under your feet.
Anyone done that?

I think it’s polycarbonate…
Looks nice. You’d definitely turn some heads with it.
Worth bearing in mind that polycarbonate scratches very easily though.
I’m pretty sure you can get specially treated ones or specialist that don’t scratch so easily, but the standard gear does.
There’s a guy in Colorado who’s been doing it for years
he’s supposidly testing them on maui last I heard
they come in two models and are filled with helium
John talk to the guys on the phone and I ordered the brochure to consider getting one
I think it’s called “Nexxt”
Ricky Carroll said that thing was a LOT of work. Got my attention as
soon as I walked by it and that was it’s purpose. I don’t think it was
intended to be a real-world solution to the needs of modern surfers.
Beautifully simple in construction; just a center stick, two skins, and
the wood rails. And a few plugs. One of those “what if” ideas that
somebody took the time to follow through. Credit to RC.

That’s the nicest one I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a few. I’ve seen the Nexxt board and a bunch of promo photos of it… but I’ve never seen images of it being surfed… lots of photos at the beach… under someone’s arm, next to a pretty girl, against the sand… no surfing. There was someone a while back that was making polycarbonite boards with a double skin, and putting pretty colored stuff between them. Made me think of a lava lamp with fins. I had a non-surfing friend call me up a few weeks back with a “brilliant idea”… clear polycarbonite surfboards… “we’ll make millions” - says he… “been done” - says me. I don’t see any new millionaires from them yet.
Maybe it’s just me, but I think a board’s first priority should be to surf good.
great stuff… what are the physical caracteristiques of this material? would the board actually react like a classical board, would it surf?
what about using fiberglass?strong enought? look at greenough spoons

Fiberglass -at least with the needed thickness to be strong enough- would be translucent at best, but not CLEAR… A few people (me included) have been thinking about that for YEARS…
Who said “CENTURIES”?
Fiberglass -at least with the needed thickness to be strong enough- would be translucent at best, but not CLEAR...
… and heavy as all getout.
Kendall is correct, don’t get your hopes up about making or riding one
of these things. Very heavy, and likely to get heavier if you put it in water.
Some boards are made for show. Ricky builds plenty that are made to go.
Mike
jesus had one of these
Have played around with polycarb on a couple of projects. Wear your safety gear. If the stuff shatters the splinters can do some damage.
I assume not to much float on these boards.
after seeing a few polycarb ones
i have thought about the possiblities of putting a window above where your front foot goes
if it was a composite type board you could rebate into the deck and glass and finishes in there
and then use sika flex to stick in a poly carbonate window
it would be freaky to see the bottom though
do you really want to see the sharks
ignorance is bliss
" I don’t see any new millionaires from them yet. "
Hi Kendall…hey its the surfboard Industry, as you know…LOL
People don’t seem to realize that the entire surf industry is smaller than a lot of single companies. Clark Foam was making $20-30 million a year. That seems like a lot, until you try to split it up among the 40 or 50 new guys trying to get into the foam business. Sex Wax… the biggest wax company only does about $2-3 million. That’s a comfortable living if you’re only supporting yourself and a few others, but when you factor in facilities, manpower, vehicles, insurance, advertising, and the occasional surf trip to indo…
