Trends in surfboards?

For years I rode the wrong board. I was stuck on Three fins, lots of rocker, skinny & thin. Over the last few years I’ve noticed a few boards come in & out of style. Seems like it started with quads. Quads helped people bogging on high performance thrusters. For me it opened my mind to all kinds of alternative shapes. Seems like everyone had mini Simmons fever for a while. Everywhere I would go people were riding them. I made a few & they blew me away. So easy to surf. It seems like the mini Simmons fad is over or ending. Then came the hipsters on midlenghts & hulls. Single fins were trying to comeback. Recently I see a lot of glider talk. Everyone’s riding them & raving about them. Growing up here in central California it seemed like there was two types  surfboards, thrusters & longboards. Are we kinda experiencing ride anything revolution? Bonzers, twinzers, fish, eggs, you see them all in most line ups on any given day.  Is the next generation growing up to appreciate all types of surfcraft? Does this mean the future of board design may not be run big brands & cnc machines?

I for one hope so!

Eh, stayrelaxed

Welcome to the “Oh” zone…

Death before CNC!!!

Hang gliders, experimental aircraft, Cessnas, F-14 Tomcats…

Different performances and feel.  Different skills required.

Ride what you like.

Ride a booger board!!  They rule!

Why anyone would ride the wrong board for years is beyond my comprehension. So many options.  The retro shit is a joke.  Those boards didn’t ride well the first time thru, so why revisit.  It’s mostly about length and style.  If I was 15, weighed 150 lbs. and could fit into tight pants;  I would ride a 5’8" in wind blown Lowers every day after school and get air.  Fuller noses, wider outlines and under 6’ is THE “trend”.   Lowel

Some folks are lucky if they can afford one used surfboard.

Even luckier if they get a hand-me-down for free.

Gotta use what you have in the barn.

Jimmi Hendrix’ first instrument was a discarded ukulele he found.

Man has a point…

It’s the way it was and should be.

Noll, Velzy, you and me

it was the pure stoke and we rode turds.

The OP was reaching out.

And I agree

By that I mean

We had to sell, the old one for the bucks to get a new one.

Things evolve

My Prime?

It did require a quiver.

And it is MHO

That (for the serious) the modern SB quiver would be:

          Mini Simm Crap surf

          Groveller     Low/mid energy

          Step up        High energy

          If you dare

          Semi gun     Firing

          Gun             You could get hurt

There are many, many thoughts as to each shape.

Working on advancing these shapes breathes life to a few.

Kick down to the worthy…

I think I rode the wrong board for years, because I didn’t know any better.  And back then, in the 70’s, there weren’t so many choices as there are today.

I hardly thought about surfboard design back then, just bought a board that looked good to me and surfed it in everything.

Ha ha glad you like my photo. ‘‘Wilson’’ and his friends and family ride beat up beyound repair hand me down donated whatever they can get. It is still about tbe stoke.

You bet I like it…

May good Souls and Stoke prevail!

Should listen to Bonta and ride a Bookie.  Seriously… do a search for “Bonta Mougabwa” - there are many pearls of wisdom in his posts.

Quad fishes will never die…

Everything works. To a point.

How well depends on what you want do with it and of course the waves themselves so different horses for different courses.
