Tri- fin conversion to single fin

Is it possible or recommended to take out the center FCS fin plugs and install a single fin box?

recommended? i guess thats up to you. more weight and board was probably made to be used as a thruster.

it is definately possible, just remove grub screws, and route/ install box as normal

I guess recommended is bad choice of a word, has anyone had experience doing it? Or has done it before? The board I want to try this on is a 6.4x 22x2 3/4. It’s a thick short board for me, I weight 160lb and ride board typically in the 5.11x19x 2.35 range.  So this board was going to be my small wave boar, and wanted something different. But, was just curious if anyone has ever done it before …

“Tri- fin conversation to single fin”

So, a tri fin was talking to  a single fin ?

What’s the punch line?

jinxs since no one answered you…

i have not done this, but why not try it?..sounds like a good shape to try it on.

you could rig your center thruster fin to make it fit in box and be able to ride it as a thruster, single, 2+1, and experement with different placements… if you don’t like the change then ride it as a thruster with the same placement

only downside i see is added weight. not really a significant issue in my book

good luck

Astevens thanks for the input it’s much appreciated, I’m not worried about the weight my self. But I just wanted some other inputs after all it was a thought that popped into my head, and not every idea is a good one or always advised!!

Thanks for your reply

They make an adapter so that you can put a thruster fin in a center fin box.  I haven’t tried one, but I’ve seen them on internet…http://www.supsurfoutlet.com/FCS-Longboard-Fin-Box-Adapter-P113.aspx

Anyway, the point being, go ahead and make the conversion, with the adapter you can still use the board as as thruster with your same fins, if desired.

Sure, why not?

Make sure to measure the thickness of the surfboard before you turn on the router....You need about an inch....you can sand down the base of the 10" box on a disc sander...a little bit !   Oh boy....takes me back to the first time I routered through the board....whoops.....and I've done it more than once...always on surfboards shaped by other people....people that don't glass.....Go for it!................Ray

...and if you blow through to the deck....we can help you fix it........measure it before pulling out the router.
