To anyone/ everyone, I’ve noticed that most questions regarding tri fin set up are usually about the center fin. What about the side fins ? How small is too small before you would defeat the purpose of what the side fin’s were intended to do. Let’s use a 9’ 17"nose,22"width,13 1/2"rounded pin, 2 3/4" thick conditions: head high/point break/juice driver: 5’7" 135-140 lbs. Thanking anyone and everyone for any info. PS: useing a 6" center fin.

I like an equal size tri-fin setup. 4 1/2 0r 4 5/8, even for small waves. In bigger surf , I sometimes use a 5" center fin. It even nose rides well , but takes a little more finesse.

The reasons for narrow (13 1/2") tails and thruster fins are the same. Both setups put the fin closer to the rail. Narrowing the tail makes you miss waves because your board won’t plane up at slow speeds. Because of cant and toe-in, large thrusters add way more drag than equivalent-weight single pin. You’re combining the worst of both worlds. There’s no need for giant thrusters with such a narrow tail. A single fin won’t spin out easily on a 13.5" tail, but a 13.5" tail with thrusters will let all those old fat guys have your waves. Get a 14.5"-15" tail with a 2+1 setup and 3" thrusters. Then you’ll have the best of both worlds. Lower thruster drag, early plane-up, and good wall riding ability.
