Even though I have been glassing for years now I am amazed at the little tricks I learn when I watch someone else glass that knows their stuff. Just recently I got a trick from a WRV glasser in Nags Head. He turned me on to the trick of using different postage circles to cover the fcs plugs and leash plugs when glassing. This isn’t anything huge but definitely saves me time and gives a better finished product. Anyone else have any little tricks that they have picked up during the years that they want to pass on?
Okay so no one wants to give up any secrets huh? I will pass on a few more. As Kokua said cutting an inch off the top of your squeegee makes it much more flexible (Kokua is the man!). Also I have found that during the winter if I mix a little hotcoat with my gloss it works much better. Filling an old pair of pantyhose or an old dress sock with foam dust makes the perfect imitation “pickle”.
I posted this a long time ago but here goes…Everyone likes worn out shaping screen…its like gold.Try putting some new screen in a snap lid plastic container along with some rocks or gravel.Next put in in the clothes dryer with temp. set at cold and tumble it for awhile. The tumbling motion will wear it out nicely.Throw in a few towels to muffle the sound.Don’t let Mom catch you.
Hey Austin- You would be amazed at how dialed guys like Kokua are. He’s living in middle of the ocean, surfing some of the best waves in the world, and working in his back yard. I was blown away by the simplicity of his one man operation. Gentlemen like Kokua and Cleanlines could write books on technique and the characters that use them. All’s we need is a publisher to front them some big bucks for the knowledge.
Howzit TSaunders, You don’t need to buy those stickers to cover FCS plugs. Just tape over the plug, center a quarter on it and cut around the quarter, it’s a perfect fit. Aloha, Kokua
