Tried a new EPS blank (FUSR)

I bought an EPS blank from a place called ProFoam in San Marcos http://www.fusreps.com/ . He calls his blanks FUSR EPS I believe the foam is 2.5 #. The beads are very small, well fused and don’t seem to tear out real easy while shaping. The foam was different than previous 2# foam that I have used. This foam seemed to be more dense and had a “crispness” to it as if it had been fused with epoxy. As far as shaping goes, I liked the foam. Not as “crisp” and nice to shape as a poly blank but overall not bad.

The blanks come in a rectangle shape with the basswood stringer glued in and the rocker cut in. They did seem to go a little overboard on the amount of glue that they used on the stringer. There seems to be a decent selection of sizes and rockers. The blank I bought was tagged as a 9’1"Y. Supposed to have the same rocker and thickness flow as the old Clark 91Y. I had used a number of Clark 91Y blanks in the past and this eps blank was not quite the same, more rocker in both the nose and tail then what I was use to with the 91Y.

Overall, satisfied with the blank and will try the FUSR 10’1Y next.

Hi Rick,

Thanks for the foam update. I’m just up the road from ProFoam. Looks like they might be a good local supplier of EPS foam blanks. How much $$$ did the long board blank cost.

Kind of ironic though…we checked with them last winter before buying that large block of foam. Surf4fins was able to get a much better deal on bulk foam from Insulfoam in Chino ,Ca.

Love the board!

Ray,

The price for the 9ft blank was $118. Definitely not as cheap as the block foam we got before but not as much work either. Easier to work with in that the rocker is already cut in and the stringer is glued up. I also prefer 2.5# ProFoam over the 2# insulfoam for the density of the foam and the additional weight of the foam in a longboard.

I picked up a “10-1Y” blank from the same place yesterday. While I was there the owner showed me some perimeter stringer blanks that he has made up.
