Tudor Boards

driving on my beach is a good way to ruin my beach.

silverback, only just got back from my bicycle ride (its ok i use hemp tyres and its made out of recycled steel that a guy down at a commune in byron bay welded for me with a solar powered welder) down to the composting toilet on the back of my property. came back and sat down to brekky and almost choked on my organic muesli upon reading your message. i would definitely hope that the surfboards your making are 100% friendly to our mother earth, and you would not own a car at all would you?? … i would suggest that you come to Australia my friend and see how large our coastline is, thousands of miles of that coastline are off limits unless you own a 4wd. do you understand that?? so what your saying is that no one should go to these areas to surf?? please post a photograph of yourself before you get here. that way when im finished driving my car over the sand dunes and ripping up all the plants and trees that get in my way i can pick you up and we can go and surf the socially acceptable 100% envioronmentally friendly surfboards that you make in some pristine beachbreaks with no one else on the beach.

Glad you care …

just information…yep it’s difficult to do anything without messing something up…but you gotta know, then take responsibility.

Here’s a quotation from a recent report regarding the type of driving you mention:

"Dr. Stephen Leatherman of the University of Maryland, one of the foremost authorities on beach ecosystems, has documented that off-road vehicles harms ghost crabs, a species that he has called an excellent indicator species for beach invertebrates.

One summer-long study on Assateague Island, Virginia found an average of 10 ghost crabs on wild beach plots, only one crab on plots with “light off-road vehicle use” and only 0.3 crabs per plot with “heavy off-road vehicle use.” Importantly, this research concluded that “pedestrians appear to have no harmful effects on ghost crabs.” (Leatherman, Barrier Island Handbook, 1988)

These machines also harass and even kill migratory and wading birds. For example, on the Holdgate beach in Brigantine Wilderness Area in New Jersey, beach buggies disturb birds, including the threatened piping plover, during critical feeding and resting periods."

There’s more … much more …

But hey as long as you’re having fun who gives a…?

this further stresses my point. i cant believe that some one could not come up with a more original lam. at least modify it a little bit.

Are we back on this tired topic again? NUUHIWA GETS MONEY FROM THE TUDORS FOR THE NUUHIWA II MODEL. Sorry to say, but the popularity of that board in the 60’s was not due to Bing’s name, but to David’s. Bing is producing very nice noserider models right now…with no mention of Nuuhiwa whatsoever. Who’s to say what is ethical or right? Should Bing be paying Nuuhiwa? Did Nuuhiwa ask Bing for too much money? Who knows? Who cares?

Every single time Tudor mentions the Nuuhiwa Noserider, he specifically brings up Nuuhiwa and thanks him for being able to offer the model. Nuuhiwa was a major influence on Tudor when he was young and is close to the family.

Also, if you think Joel is trying to “trick” anyone by using that logo, you have a sorry understanding of popular culture and artistic influence. Of course it looks like the Bing logo…it’s supposed to . Influence and homage, you can follow it through cinema, art, music…and yes, surfing.

As Jim Jarmusch has stated, "“I don’t believe in originality. You take inspiration from whatever moves you, and you find your own voice in those things.”

As for the comment about a “less experienced” shaper finishing the Tudor boards…Tom Eberly and Steve Ford are fairly accomplished shapers. And the Rabbit shape has been updated and is not the same one as the previous SK model.

All I can say is I’ve got two Tudors and they are both top notch…shapes, glassing, color, stringers, etc. Very unique boards compared to what else is in the water.

That was f...ing hilarious bro. Not all us guys in the U.S.A. have our nose in the air. Matter of fact we are the worst polluting country in the world most likely, I know we burn resources 10:1 over most others. One of my biggest surf dreams is going to West Oz, buying a 4x4 and living in the back for a couple months accessing the out of the way spots. If the plover bird lover doesn't take you up on the offer I sure want to.

I’m sure there was mutual profits being made from both Bing and DAvid during the time the originals were being made. Is the board less valid if Davids name was not on the model shape. Bottom line no. Did marketing the board with Davids name on the label sell more boards? Questionable at the time David popularity was questionable at the time, but due to this model he definately made a name.

I think in most peoples eyes the bottom line the shape is a Bing. David did not shape the board, he may have input his ideas. Who cares? I’m sure the Bing NR would have evolved either way. Bings knowledge and shapes for noseriding didn’t just happed when Davis signed the line. The boards were an evolution, David name on the board was just a muse. Atleast in my eyes.

It’s the blatant disrespect of knocking off the Bing logo, shape, stinger combo, tail block. Come on it’s a rip any way you look at it. Bing doesn’t get a royalty from the Tudors for using his logo.

Who needs homage like that?

no matter what tudor does, there will be those who want to take him down a notch…and that’s a fact

check Takayama, Tyler, Cooperfish, etc…many many many board / stringer / tailblock, giant concave / fin combos modeled on the Nuuhiwa Noserider, tudor wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last

I don’t think most people could care less what Tudor does. Why is that a fact?

At least the Takayama, Tyler, Cooperfish, have their own twist and mix up the combo and use their own original logo not a knock-off.

It’s the blatant in your face rip-off, now if Tudor got permission from Bing and payed a royalty to Bing. I’m most people would see it as a homage. This did not happen.

The popularity of that board has everything to do w/ Bing. Takayama designed the Noserider for Bing . I think D.N. took it on as his own after Bing went to Idaho. Regardless, one cannot expect surfers who grew up in that era to respect Tudor for ripping off his elder. As Bigbrother said Tyler and Cooper spun their own version. Tudors riding on Bings coat tails.

Dubstar well worded. Originally I had questions about the rabbit shape which seemed to turn into a Tudor bash fest. The current “Rabbit” is shaped by Tom Eberly who has an incredible history in the surf industry. I am still curious if anyone has ridden one and in what type of conditions.

I think it looks like a fun board to ride; I’d like to try one, much different than the single fins I have.
