Tudor has a new shape the rabbit. Has anybody ridden one or know how they work?
this is nothing new…been around for a LONG time…if you’re interested, i’d suggest checking it out from Stu Kenson
Why Stu?
Stu shaped for JT before Tudor machine-copied SK’s boards and hired a less talented shaper (for a lot less money) to just do the finish work. It’s the principle. Stu calls it the “RB” under “retro single fins”…named after Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew.
Your wording makes it sound like Tudor had Stu make the programs and then fired him to “to have a less talented shaper” finish the boards for less money. Is that what you think happened?
I think it was a difference of opinion over money but if I was to get a Tudor shortboard it would definitely be from Stu over Joel why pay $100 more for a tudor lam.
Stu shaped the boards for JT surfboards for years. after awhile, JT scanned one of SK’s finished shapes into a shaping machine and paid someone else less money to just do the finish work. so basically, SK got screwed. at least that’s how he tells it.
edit: yes LESider, it was about money. SK said that Joel offered to have SK keep shaping for him, but for a lot less money…he obviously wouldn’t take a huge paycut, so he left and JT got someone to finish the machine shapes.
From knowing people in the industry my understanding is Stu was involved in programing most of the shortboard shapes into the computer and was doing all the finishing for quite a while. Rumor has it, it did come down to money but dont jump to point the greedy finger at the Tudors. Stu is a great shaper. I have had his boards in the past, he is well respected but I know that the Tudors were not trying to undercut him or rip him off.
Comparing the Rabbit to the Good Karma (both refined by Stu), I have a Good Karma, when the waves get overhead the fin pops out the the board spins out I am wondering if the rabbit would have the same problem?
I should give a better description of the problem I have with the Karma. I have ridden it in mellow double overhead surf and it worked great but if the surf gets grinding and hollow the fin does not hold.
I know that the Tudors were not trying to undercut him or rip him off.
Just like how the Tudors ripped off Bing’s logos and shapes. I have a hard time believing you.
on a more important note the i have thursday and friday off and it looks like the swell is picking up nicely for DI point. going up the beach in my 4wd. yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeoooooo.
In your opinion how did the Tudors rip off Bing?
the logo JT uses on his “David Nuuhiwa Noserider” is exactly the same as what Bing used back in the day…he just replaced “Bing” with “Joel Tudor Surfboards”
That is the Bing logo, do you know how much royalty Tudor pays Bing for every “Nuuhiwa Noserider” that logo goes on?
If Bing gets an agreed royalty for every board, is he ripping it off?
well then by all means…tell us…how much is JT paying Bing Copeland for the use of his logo?
I remember this has been discussed before :
yes, i recall that thread…it was a good one
Sorry, do you have any relation with the Tudors or JT surfboards?
Talking about the shape, i would go with Stu, personal things aside, he created the shape (sure with Joel’s imput) and i think he’ll be the one who can shape it better suited for you.
I would love trying a Mutant Moon… anyone?
Coque.
Hey mick -
Sounds great - glad the swell’s picking up for you…
Driving 4WD on beaches is, however, a sure fire way of killing your beach. When did this form of environmental destruction become socially acceptable?
Maybe if people understood the damage that 4wd vehicles wreak on the environment, less people would do it?
Seems so harmless and fun doesn’t it?
