i know that everyone has a bad day here and there. but the joel tudor that i met was a lot different from the one that everyone else talks about. i can be a jerk my self some times. but dont tell me that i cant judge someone becasue i dont know myslef.
i dont hold my status as a local over anyones head. joel in the few hours that i met him used his status as a pro to do whatever he wanted to do at the skatepark. maybe he is a nice guy in the water but when he’s on a skateboard he’s a real a dick.
i have had the opprotunity to skate and surf with many pros in my years and most of which are very willing to share resources.
i really fell that some of his spiritual karma rambling is a bunch of crap. someone who preaches it as hard as he does wouldnt have done the things that he did that night, even if he was having a bad day.
he showed me and a crew of other guys a total lack of disrespect.
when you think about it the guy cant really go for a surf without being leered at by the surrounding throng, which would tend to make you lose it a bit. with no turn going unwatched. he has been put up on a pedestal so these things will happen.
to me it doesnt matter who you are a person is a person in my eye. who cares if he can hang ten 10x better then me. i am tired of people who sympathize for people like this. there job is to surf, SURFING IS THERE FULL TIME PAYING JOB. and with that comes responsibilites and the fact that people idleizing you.
but no matter what happens in life there is someone always breathing down your back and checking you out wether it be at work or out in the water.
when i met him i didnt realize who it was right away. i bet it took us 15 to 20 minutes of talking among oursleves and a huge poster to realize that it was him. and no one was up his butt trying to get signatures and what not.
I’m certainly not making any excuses for Tudor. I surfed with him, he was cool and normal, and he and his mom were very easy to deal with in regards to ordering a board.
If it took you that long to figure out who he was, how do you know it was even him?
I find constant attacks on public surf figures to be just as annoying as hero worship. This post started out about Tudor eggs, not Joel Tudor’s perceived character defects. There was really no need to ever even discuss him…
so are you going to tell me how old you are as i am curios too. and theres probably a reason either then the fact that you where just curios.
as for the thread i did add my opinion on joel tudor and the thread wasnt about it so i am sorry that i started an anti joel tudor movement post. i am sure that there are times when joels a great guy. but people need to realize that if we would do something like this once he would do it several times over.
i know it was joel tudor becasue he pointed at a poster of him on the wall and asked if i knew who he was.
i just think that some pro surfers use there person as a way to live above the law. if i had done that to anyone of you guys you would label me a jerk, even if i was the nicest most graceous guy some of the time. and maybe you wouldnt post a thread about me but you would tell your friends about this guy that was being a jerk at the beach today.
all right thats that and i will be doing talking about it.
The cool thing about this forum and this thread is that I got to talk to the guy who actually shaped the board! Thanks Mr Ford for responding and for the tips on riding the single fin. Thats what I was really looking for.
I think you are over-reacting about the incident at the skatepark!!
I’m 36 and have been involved in skateboarding for most of my life. If you expect people to “take turns” in a pool or on a ramp, then you must come from a totally different universe than the one I’ve grown up in. Here in California, the birth place and true essence of skateboarding, you don’t get a turn by default. You have to be assertive. People take as many runs as they want and can get, regardless of how many runs other people are getting. It’s a highly competitive, dog-eat-dog, ridiculously macho, male psych fest.
It’s not always like that, but when “it’s on” it’s every man for himself. Like I said, it’s ridiculous, but that’s the way it is. So if I had experienced Tudor that day doing what you say, I wouldn’t have reacted like you. The only one responsible for me not getting as many runs as I like is me. The “do you know who I am?” thing sounds a bit crazy but I suspect it was in response to some attitude you guys started flowing his way.
well let me tell you something i was going to drop this whole thing with my last post but this is the absolute 100% cross my heart hope to die stick a needle in my eye and all that other crap. you know what if you dont want to believe me thats fine becasue i dont ever have to share any info with you shannonk. not to call you out on it though.
i dont know how it works on the west coast but pool skating here in florida works a little different. no one in the middle of someones run decides to drop in on someone becasue they fell like they need to get the run. its a share the wealth kind of thing like a line. something that was taught to us in elementary school.
i can also asure you that i or no one in my crew of guys harrased him in any way, we believed that he was just some normal jerk until we finaly put a name with the face. there was no verbal confrintation until he ran into me.
this one time, at a skate park in the north east, tudor brushed off a park worker who informed him of the need by law to wear pads, claiming his skill would save him from injury. the result? a broken elbow. consider your fall avenged.
They are a functional alternative for people who can shell out the $$$$$…Do what I did and try and shape a board very similar to the Karma. Turned out great.
