Anyone ride the Tudor Eggs in the 6 foot range? I’ve never ridden a small single , this one (KArma)looks to have the wide point back of center. Retro Fad or Functional alternative? Thanks, MDM
i love the “Good Karma” and the “Diamond Tail Egg”…both great boards from JT, Inc.
joel tudor is a jerk, but the boards he rides are pretty nice.
so you know personally Joel Tudor, right?
joel tudor is a jerk
lemme guess…you heard that from a friend of a friend of a friend who knows joel personally, right?!!
but the boards he rides are pretty nice.
his boards are very nice…and VERY overpriced. it’s amazing what people are willing to pay for a channin glass job and the JT name. i love the boards, and i’d love to have a few of ‘em…but if i’m shellin’ out that kinda coin, it’ll be for a bing.
I would consider Hunt Customs eggy “Kind Creation” too. Its a more reasonable, solid performing board. John Mel @ Freeline makes a good egg as well.
i wouldnt say that i know him exactly personaly. but heres my story. two years ago i was skating my local vans skatepark in oralndo, it also happened to be the weekend of surf expo. so every boardsport pro was in town. tudor came into the park about half way through the pool session. tudor proceded to take over the pool and decided that it was all right for him to drop in on people and snake peoples runs, afer about 20 minutes or so the 6 guys that where skating the pool moved over to the outside bowl section.
about ten minutes later he came outside and started doing it again. this time more and more.
i was going frontside around a bowl corner and there he was coming the opposite direction, i ended up clipping the side of his board and falling hard on my hip.
so i finally confronted him about it pretty calmly. i asked him why he felt the need that he didnt need to take turns and share the bowl with the crew of guys who where skating it. there where only 7 guys out there after all.
he replied by saying " do you know who i am" i did and said but that doesnt give you the right to act like a jerk. he then added well i am sponosred by vans so that gives me more of a right to the park then you.
call me crazy but everyone has a right to a skatepark or a wave no matter who you are or if your sponsored or not. its in my opinion the only people who have a slight presidence to any location is the locals. and even then i think it should be a mutual respect. i am totaly down for sharing with a new guy and so where the rest of the guys. if he would have justed waited for his turn to come up every couple of a minutes the whole thing would have been awesome.
i know thats how it works in my crew wether it be skating a pool or surfing together.
it could have been something cool to say hey i skated with tudor but he was the one that ruined the situation. i have skated and surfed with a fair share of pro athletes and most of them have been very willing to share the resources.
this is why i feel that i can label joel tudor a jerk. it was a first hand experience where i got to meet the real guy that he truly is. i really love all of his “karma is king and what ever you do will come back in the end to get you.” so if not by know or some time in the future he should be getting some pay backs for ruing a good session by being a jerk.
What I’m most intrested in is the difference having the wide point back as apposed to wide point forward a la california pin tail. The Karma is a 6 4 btw. Its in my local shop where I have a cretit that is burning a 3rd degree hole in my thigh.
mdm, ive got a 6’8" tudor diamond egg,im mostly a longboarder, but this board is a blast to ride , a change of pace- the fin makes it turn real snappy, its a very flexey fin, i think its a 9" karma, as far as the “karma” model board that you refer to, it has a wide point forward and a pulled in tail , go and rent or borrow a copy of “surf movie” by micheal halsband, its got about an hour of b&w footage of these boards in action, or try and get a copy of “natural exspresions” by john smart both movies show tudor on eggs, this will give you a good idea of what is possible with that model board, before you drop down 600 bucks on the thing, btw, ive got to admit he is a little too cocky
i tell you what. if you want to see a lot of pro’s acting badly, you should check out the Noosa Festival in March. Lots of familiar faces taking far too many waves from lesser surfers.i lost respect for quite a few pro riders including 2 very well known female surfes. they only get away with those sorts of things at big events. put them in a small group away from their hangers on and groupies and they are a little more polite.
before you drop down 600 bucks on the thing
Try $700 to $800 for a new JT. As far as the Retro Fad, the wide point is front of center in most 70’s single fins. As far as JT is concerned, he is an awesome surfer. However, I am fortunate because I am not going to run into him anytime too soon. I will be surfing this weekend in Cape May, New Jersey. And yes there will be good surf, but Joel’s skinny ass would freeze to death in the 35 degree water and 35 degree air temps. I did have a chance to surf with the Jersey Devil (Dean Randazzo) one time. He seemed pretty cool, but then again he grew up in and surfed in Jersey so what else would one expect.
On this one the wide point seems back of Center. I’m in the North East and the swell is just starting to hit. I’ll give a review after I ride it.
wow…great lookin’ board…enjoy it
Rode it in overhead bumpy point surf. Suprisingly fast , good paddler . Slid out on my first wave but thats going from a brom fish that I can bank over a turn and just go. Once I adjusted my style The board felt really good. Always wants to be turning and turn initiation is a snap.
The 6 4" is a bit small for me at 185. A 6 9 would have been better. Best ridden in clean surf head high. Beach break would be no problem. I’m going to move the 8.5 " fin back a half inch and see how that feels. MDM
I think like most people, Joel is probably not who or what most people who barely know him think he is…
All I can say is I met him and surfed with him for a week in Costa Rica. He was fairly “normal” and pretty cool, as well. I can think of 20 local surfers I know who come off as more arrogant and aggressive. My friend later ran into him in Hawaii and spent the winter seeing him around. After first trying on my own through the factory rep, this past summer, we gave Joel’s cell a call to ask about some of his boards. He took the time, not once, but twice, to call back and rap about designs. Ended up giving me the home number and told me to call his mom there instead of the factory. She went out of her way to help me out and I ended up with the Nuuhiwa Noserider I wanted. Super easy transaction, shipped out to New York, and a great deal…which I never even asked for. Sure they’re running a business, but I get more attitude from my local shop where I used to work.
As for prices, I’ve got two Tudors, both have great glass jobs and unique tints, they ride incredibly well, and worth every cent. And anyway, I think shops inflate the price considerably…got my 9’0 Diamond T with tints etc. for about $750, and have seen Nuuhiwas out here for $200 less than what San Diego shops charge.
i think once you get used to the board you’ll love it. i am about 6’1 or 2 and weigh 78kgs (don’t ask me what that is in pounds) and i spend most of my time riding boards between 5’7 and 6’4 (mostly 6’0 and all single fins) and they have heaps of speed and turn well when you get used to it. i have a 6’4 (from 1970) that used to spin out on backhand bottom turns when i first started using it but soon became my favourite board. i still have fun watching friends try and ride it and give up too quickly as the board shoots out from under their feet.
stick with it man, sounds like a carving machine.
by the way, i was in San Diego about a year ago and freaked out when i saw the price of a 6’0 Karma board in a shop: $818!! and that’s American dollars. man, i wouldn’t pay that much in Aussie dollars for a 6’ board. i did like the look of the mutant moon shape too though.
I’ll stick with it for a while. I like riding different boards even if it holds back my surfing a little. Right now my favorites are a 5 11 twinzer and 5 10 brom fish. The single rides so different from the twin its not even funny , its a challenge. The surf here has been pumping now for 3 days and will continue through tuesday so I’ll ride it a few more time. Thanks for the feedback, MDM
PS half of the reason I bought it was due to the sick tint job. I’m a sucker for eye candy.
For what it’s worth, I was talking to Joel in the water a few weeks back about some of his color work on his boards and he was more than willing to answer all my questions. Everytime I’ve talked to him he’s been really cool.
i guess everbody has a bad day every once in a while. but when i met him he was a real jerk.
Turbohog, everyone gets in a bad mood sometimes! I’m sure you can be a jerk just as I can be! Don’t judge someone lest he be judged himself! Joel is an exceptionally nice, giving and careing individual. As well as being mature far beyond his years. Not to mention he is the most humble person I have ever met! Steve Ford, currently shaping and glassing Joel Tudor Surfboards, most certainly MDM’s board!
