Tuna V.S. Alaia

Just curious what you guys think about this topic. I was thinking of trying something finless for my next board (still waiting to get some footage for a ride report on my first-ever board, we’ll just say it’s incredible for now), so I was doing some browsing on the old Alais and I came across something called a “Tuna”

From what I can gather, a Tuna is the foam/fiberglass equivalent to an Alaia. Seems like it’d be easier to build, but whenever I watch videos, the Alaia seems smooth and powerful while the Tuna seems unstable and corky. I want to give sliding around a shot (snowboarder at heart) but I don’t want it to be a complete piece of rubbish.

In case you have no idea what I’m talking about:

Now, granted the surfer in the Alaia video is Rob Mochado, I’m still thinking the Alaia looks more fun

How about something like this?: http://www.elleciel.com/boards-gallery/no-65/

And now that we’re talking finless, an interesting reading: http://issuu.com/retinal_adiction/docs/19_ancient/15

Check your tuna link…

Used to snowboard a lot. Was never into “sliding around”  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiWweqZdS3A

I would probably vote for the alaia though I have never ridden a Tuna so can’t really compare from experience.

Tuna link fixed!

caveman speaks,of agga boards,

maui -aggaman  Agaman lived in a Cave on Maui

surfed the west side… what finless was ,… before wegner

and foam tuna,marketing.

Tuna is expensive for something that is so ridiculously difficult to surf

That looks a lot like something Mike Daniel had over 20 years ago:

I’ve never surfed an alaia but would love to give one a go…

The tuna makes zero sense to me…

I would want to surf an alaia to get the feel of what the ancient hawaiians were doing.

Get in touch with surfing’s roots.

Gain understanding and respect for those who came before.

Etc, etc.

The tuna is not a link to the past… It’s a modern board that works terribly. The end.

…but who has actually surfed the Tuna to provide an accurate comparison?  I would love to know.  Finless has been in the back of my head for well over a year now…

Ambrose, those are some crazy looking boards! Who shaped them, and who glassed them?

I saw a poor sucker, i mean surfer on one in fat, small waves. It was pretty embarrassing to watch him bobbing up and down, not catch any waves, and generally make a fool of himself. Had problems trying to paddle straight.

caveman?

agaman?

heard through the coconut wireless about the finless underground

on maui and sold some wild shapes from those guys when i was

consignment boards

then some body said oh yeah the agga board guys…

so I google-searched aggs boards and came up

with this interview with cave man,he was a character

on ns kauai i met when he was at basa’s house

one year…

…ambrose…

agga boards…?

the interview is kinda thick but scroll down

and get to the pictures.

I vote for something like a Grape Composit Alaia or a Beater from “Y”.

A normal alaia is so much work-a pain to ride for bigger guys in crappy surf that the tuna was born.

I am working on a big boy boadyboard finnless thingy.

The tuna (eps/epoxy) was a right bastard to catch and ride waves on for my weight (200lbs) whereas the albacore (eps/foam soft top/slick skin boittom) was much easier to catch and ride waves on.

It’s also a lot cheaper. ($500 odd vs $295: depending on your location in the world of course).

But I creased the albacore I was riding in 3 foot beachbreaks after only 3 days. It was fun until then.

It appears the internal stringers broke thus creating multiple creases across the slick skin.

The Ryan Lovelace “rabbits foot 2” looks like more fun.

Look at this sliding and gliding. Best footage of finless surfing I’ve seen since the epic Derek Hynd J Bay footage.
