Just curious what you guys think about this topic. I was thinking of trying something finless for my next board (still waiting to get some footage for a ride report on my first-ever board, we’ll just say it’s incredible for now), so I was doing some browsing on the old Alais and I came across something called a “Tuna”
From what I can gather, a Tuna is the foam/fiberglass equivalent to an Alaia. Seems like it’d be easier to build, but whenever I watch videos, the Alaia seems smooth and powerful while the Tuna seems unstable and corky. I want to give sliding around a shot (snowboarder at heart) but I don’t want it to be a complete piece of rubbish.
…but who has actually surfed the Tuna to provide an accurate comparison? I would love to know. Finless has been in the back of my head for well over a year now…
I saw a poor sucker, i mean surfer on one in fat, small waves. It was pretty embarrassing to watch him bobbing up and down, not catch any waves, and generally make a fool of himself. Had problems trying to paddle straight.
The tuna (eps/epoxy) was a right bastard to catch and ride waves on for my weight (200lbs) whereas the albacore (eps/foam soft top/slick skin boittom) was much easier to catch and ride waves on.
It’s also a lot cheaper. ($500 odd vs $295: depending on your location in the world of course).
But I creased the albacore I was riding in 3 foot beachbreaks after only 3 days. It was fun until then.
It appears the internal stringers broke thus creating multiple creases across the slick skin.
The Ryan Lovelace “rabbits foot 2” looks like more fun.
Look at this sliding and gliding. Best footage of finless surfing I’ve seen since the epic Derek Hynd J Bay footage.
