TWIN FIN TEMPLATES [some big ]

see “surfing Bowls” thread … that’s what the OUTSIDE edges of the fins look like !!

…Will you be making wood core , or solid glass fins for your new “resin [non] swirl fish” , Chris ?

cheers mate !

ben

Good question, probably wood cores to start followed by fibre glass cores foiled with a covering of carbon/glass composite stolen from board crazy’s shed when he’s not looking.

Just in case you thought I was joking

hi Luke !!

[if you’re there ?]

…here’s a foam core , sprayed , fibreglass copy of the polycarbonate $15.40 fin ** I mentioned on the 'phone …

depth : 6 1/2"

base : 4 3/4 "

rake : c 3 3/4"

I hope this helps your fish hold in better in the bigger stuff , mate !!

cheers !

ben

** if you can’t get 'em , let me know …I’ll pick up a few here , if ya like ? [ for me and you , to try out .]

I’m not sure how big or small these templates are appearing on people’s screens there , but on mine , they are not actual size …

the sizes they are appearing for me are actually almost big enough to use as medium size twin fins …like a 4 3/4 " base , 5 and a bit " depth , on some of the templates…so , obviously , if you find the dimensions I mentioned on the cardboard templates too big , the " screen size" version you’re seeing may be a more practical / better option …

just my thoughts …

ben

  4 3/4" base , 5" depth .....

[and , as a "funky" negative print ....]

chip when you make these templates do you compensate for glass overlap over the edges of the fins?

I’ve done this a few times, taken lots of time to get them perfect and then forget I’m going to bulk them up with glass…

do you have a certan amount of glass overlap everytime?

hi "deathfrog " !

Okay, this is on wood or foam core fins …

…I tape off one side , and glass the other .

Then do the other side *.

There is a “halo” of excess glass as a border to the fin , which I sand to very close to the fin’s outline . [I don’t use the rovings method I have read about here , although that also sounds good for keeping the fin’s edge[s] watertight.]

  • So, I don’t “lap” the cloth , as you would with a rail .

hope this helps !

ben

well that’s kinda what I ment with better wording.

The ‘halo’ of glass, like on your sharky fins with fish fabric, did you plan to have that much or did it just end up that way?
