Twin Keel Egg

So I’ve got a FCD bonzer egg (6’10 x 21.25 x 2.5).  For fun I tried it without the bonzer fins and instead used Greg Griffin twin keel fins in the back bonzer side bites, and wow; I never went back to the bonzer fins!  It’s a touch squirly on bottom turns but super fast and firm down the line, while still loose on turns.  I know conventional wisdom says the fins are too far front, but it rides great.  Maybe it’s a combo of the bonzer side bite angle to the nose, bonzer concaves, GG fin, and me riding a step forward on the board all working together in just the right way.  The board’s about done, so I’m thinking of a replacement and can’t help but wonder what some changes would do?

If the next board is about the same dims, but with a quad setup and standard bottom instead of the bonzer concaves, how might the board compare to the previous one if also ridden as a twin keel (twin fins in the front quad fin boxes)?

Not sure why I can’t reply to the thread, but thanks for everyone’s feedback.

I have ridden it as a single, but it didn’t feel too different from riding it as a bonzer.  It does have the bonzer concaves, and is fairly deep along each side of the center fin box.  I’m wondering if those two deep concaves may be one of the things making it work with the twins so far up.  The curves in the back of the concave and the ridge between them adding to some stability in the tail that wouldn’t otherwise be there?

very interesting.

I have actually talked with Greg about doing an “orbital” build with twin keels

an eliptical shape w round nose, round tail… like a saucer basically… hope to be able to have him build that for me in the future when funds  permit.

Thanks for posting this little review of your fin explorations. I have been thinking of something like this for some time now. Nice to hear you are getting good results.  You might went to try a small finger fin in the center box for more stability off the bottom. Or perhaps a small canards in frount of the keel.  Have you played with putting the small bonzer runer in front

Joe Blair has his quads set further up on his boards. Might be worth you time to check his web page.

The Bing Synchronizer comes with a 5-box setup.  One of the suggested fin setups is a small keel + canard.  That’s my favorite setup for a fish.  They also suggest a small keel + bonzer runner, but I’ve never tried that.

Thanks guys for posting this up, got my gears turning!

Hi Geb, Have you tried it as a single fin?

I’ve often wondered if a twin keel would hold a longboard better in trim for noseriding.  Maybe a double foil with no cant or toe-in on a board with a noserider -friendly rocker.   You could readily run a somewhat wider tail block with a straighter rear quarter to engage more rail and tail area

Does that bonzer have the bonzer channels?  I can’t tell from the pic.

Gdaddy that is something to think about a twin keel noserider? lots of Big Fish coming from Skip Frye Disciples
Larry Mabile , Josh Hall, and others most have a pulled in nose and running a twiner set up or quad . The keels tend to go on the Simms style boards Now a fuller nose board with keel fins Just might make some magic.

Round rail and keels I’ve been having fun on this recently fins are further back is not squirrely at all going into the bottom turn and definitely fast.

As above a Small trailer should stop that or just enjoy the drift. How deep are the concaves ?

Twin fin forever!

More speed more drive more turn more spray

Looks like the old Twinzer set up.
