Howdy,
I’m currently working on a 5’6" mini simmons with some glassed-on keel fins, and was wondering if anyone had an opinion on adding a cant to the fins. I’m planning on putting some 8.25"x3.5" fins on, about an inch, inch and a quarter from rail/tail with a slight toe in. The board has a concave, about 3/8" at the tail, feathered to the rails.
This is my first mini, so I’m not even sure how the thing will ride in the South Florida wind chop, but was hoping for a little advice.
Thanks for the help.
the board will go great in FL waves…for the fins i would suggest a little bit longer base and height on keel to prevent too much slide out. think 9.5-10inch base and 4.5-5inch height. 1/4" toe in and 4 degree cant. you will be golden.
Fin size is all about the width at the fin placement. How wide is the board and how wide is the tail, and tail block?
yeah, some numbers would be nice.
I put the keels on my mini parallel to the stringer, so neither toe nor cant, concave in the last 18’', slight diamond tail. 5’7, hell wide and even thicker. way too much volume in nose and tail, still love how it surfs though.
Thanks for all the replies. The board weighs in at 5’6", slight diamond tail, with 21.75" at the widest, 18.75" a foot from the tail, and a 16.25" tail block. The concave runs about 20" up. More volume forward, about 3" and feathered aft.
Thanks for any advice.
i would still recommend my numbers. take a look at the true ames tyler warren keel
Are there Futures or FCS mini simmons keels available ? I’m planing on building a mini simmons this spring and really don’t want to glass on fins. I like the idea of trying different fins particularly on a board like this.
My 5’ mini Simmons has Probox plugs and I found 4* cant worked best - lots of drive and skate, but not too tracky. Lots of fun.
If they are double foiled and the board was mine I would place them about 6 inches from the tail, straight up, no toe in. Mike
I read on swaylocks somewhere and went with it. I’ve made about 10 , all straight no cant or toe. All work well and easy to figure out. Close to rail about 2" and about 3" or 4" from tail.
The ones I made worked a bit better with the fins forward. Closer to where I put fish keels. My last was a fun board, but none of them surfed as well as any of my fishes so I stopped making them. Regardless, they’re cool little boards with an interesting history. Mike
