Two tales of Cordless surfers.#1...........

Tale#1)It’s July,1999 ,early morning ; surfing a favorite North O.C. rivermouth break,4-6’ with a low incoming tide from -1.0 to +5.0 feet, and moving in fast! Because of the tidal/river flow it made for a good fast break, close to a short rock jetty. I had the break pretty much to myself,There was two older teen boys in the water with me (16-19yrs old). The two youths paddled by making comments about my leash(I was riding a wide supercharged 6’-4" fish, with a XM 5.5’ ultra comp leash).I told them that:I had never seen them at this particular break before and a leash here was a good thing. As they paddled away laughing on dad’s 10’ $1500.00+ Weber Performer, and a Greek eliminator(another 1500.00++board),I told them ,“I’ve seen a lot of boards over the years get eaten by the rocks”. Well, within 20min. these guys had lost there boards and,had to pick them off the jetty. The one kid with the really big mouth got grilled by a set of 4-5 waves before he could get clear of the jetty, getting knocked down several times, receiving some bad lacerations for his effort. He yelled at his buddy,“f–k this place I got more than a dozen dings, and cracked the fin on my dad’s new Weber”.The other kid said,"yea,I got at least 6 bad dings too! As they paddled back to shore the mouthy one turn in my direction and flipped me the bird as yelled,“you suck leash kook”…Guess who got the last laugh.Herb.
