Two toned paint

There is an artist named David Simpson, he does minimal paintings that change color. From one side they may appear yellow and from the other orange. Or blue then green, etc.

Is anyone aware of a paint that will dramatically change hue from different angles, and if so, give us some info.

Thanks.

And Happy New Year to all…

Hi Llilible03,

“color shift” paint has been used in the custom auto industry for years. You may want

to check into some custom car websites…

George

You gotta check these guys out. They have some really cool paints and more.

Hi Lilibel03

There are tons of color-shifting paints. House of Kolor makes what is considered to be the highest quality stuff, but it’s hundreds of dollars for a few ounces.

maxmercy used some on his longboard in this thread, and it was the 1.29 / bottle variety from a crafts store:

You can also buy inexpensive color-shifting paints in rattle can kits. The company is called DupliColor, and they sell these rattle-can kits at every auto-parts store on the planet (Auto Zone, Kragen, etc). A kit is about 18 bucks, and has 3 cans: 1 black base, 1 color-shift, 1 clear coat.

I doubt they are the same quality and effect of House of Kolor, but if you just want to dip your toe in the water, it seems a low-risk option. Here’s the website:

Another inexpensive way to go is to just buy a rattle-can base black (or black for your spray gun if you’re not afraid of compressed air like me), and then mix a clear gesso with this kind of thing:

This company sells all kinds of color-shifting paints very inexpensively. maxmercy mentioned them in this post above, but their site is:

When I grow up and am no longer afraid of compressed air, I’m going to try the $50 bucks worth of paints I bought from them and let you know how they turn out

Good luck, hope that helps!

Howzit llilibel, It's called chamelion paint and has been around for a while. Comes in 3 and 4 colors and changes color as it passes by you. It's mostly used for cars and motorcycles but has other applications also. Not cheap and not sure if it's been tried under resin or epoxy so you should do some research on it. Have seen some motorcycles with it and it's trippy to see the colors change. Aloha,Kokua

Well, the Silver Surfer come to mind.

The rattle can stuff is new. The last time I visited that site it wasn’t yet available. Definitely want to try the stuff. It seems that you would need the surfboard to be very well fine sanded like a 1000 grit sanded gloss before you shot the black base coat cause any scratch will show.

There’s a guy in my neighborhood that has a Shelby Cobra painted with the Pro system. The thing blinds you on a sunny day.

This was the first thing to come to mind…though that should’nt stop you trying it! I’d snavel a small sample from the supplier and run a test panel under “speedfinish” and gloss coat.

Then again, the pearlescent paints which have long been used on custom cars work their magic under multiple coats of deep polished laquer…

Or you could do the glitter flake like a low rider? or you could do a pink glitter board…Gaylord Manstiff Model.

Hi,

Once I watched a TV programm about tuning cars and they used a paint with this characteristics…
