Tyler Longboad Resin Coating

I just picked up a used Sleek Zeek. Its a beautiful board, rides like a dream but really really heavy. I’m surprised at how responsive it is in the water, but I need a forklift to get the board from my car to the beach. There is a ding towards the nose. The board is red with a white deck. Where its dinged (or chipped), however, underneath appears to be another coat of green resin, not foam or cloth. A friend looked at it and said that the board was probably re coated and that the original board color was the green. That would explain the weight, but someone else out in the water (who owns a Tyler) says that they put two coats of resin on the board to increase the weight. Furthermore, the deck still has Tyler’s signature on it. I would imagine that if  only the bottom, an rails were re-resined, there would be some difference between the new coat and and the old coat, but it is perfectly smooth.

I realize I should just take the board down to the Tyler shop but its a long trip and have not had the time. As you can tell I don’t make boards so I’m looking for some insight.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like it might have an opaque pigmented coat between the sanded hotcoat and the gloss.  That's the old school method before spraying the blank (Polyurethane/polyester construction) or color coat sprayed on the outside (Surftech/Boardworks construction) became popular.

It is easy to put dimensions and signature on the sanded opaque coat and clear coat/gloss over it.

Wow, Thanks John. The boards origins and influences are definitely “old school”  (but not completely retro), so maybe that’s it. Been surfing Malibu with it over the last week and it is really incredible. Can’t say enough good things about it.
