U.V. Resin for Hotcoats

Does anyone have experience using U.V. resin for the hotcoat? If so, do you add the SA like regular resin and follow the normal steps for applying the resin. In the archives, some one mentioned waiting a short while for the wax to rise to the surface before taking the board in the sun to kick the resin. Any suggestions???

3 ways to handle this one.

1)add some catalyst like a regular hot coat and let it kick like normal.

2)add a little catalyst, let it sit a few minutes then give it the UV.

or 3) add no catalyst, give it short dosages of UV (count to ten and take it out of UV exposure, let it sit, repeat).

easiest way is to catylise like a regular hot coat. Theres plenty of time to do it no laps to tuck or anything. Once it kicks the wax should have risen and take it in the sun and finish the curing.

I’ll add a fourth way of doing it (which worked for me) : add no catalyst (other than UV catalyst), let it sit 15’ away from UV, then take it outside for UV exposure.

I just got done with a Kite Board yesterday, the whole thing in UV resin, Lam, Hot Coat, Gloss. The board was finished in about 3 hours. Just use the UV Hot Coat like any old hot coat. Tape, Paint it on, Let it sit for about 10 -15 minutes. I just open the door and uncover the windows so it kicks off slightly, then walk it outside, or you could just walk it outside for 30 seconds or so and bring it back inside to cure. Listen, i used to be a MEK guy, but UV makes life soooooooo much easier and cost efficient. The only time I use MEK is when I’m doing a really dark tint, or dark swirl.

Howzit Mugwump, When using UV resin for a hot coat you need to double the amount of S.A… This also thins the resin somewhat more and That is one reason I just shoot hot coats with catalyst. If you want your hot coat to cure faster just wait about 15 minutes after it kicks and then put it in the sun. It’ll be rock hard after 15-20 minutes. Aloha, Kokua

UV resin makes the process so much quicker but I found it to be a pain to walk a dripping board outside, especially on a windy day. So if I use UV I catalyze it and when it starts to gel take it out. That way the leaves and dust don’t stick in it and it’s ready to go in mins. Also, my only ventilation is an open door which I can’t do with UV (cough, cough).

Thanks for the imput guys!! I’ve been using Solarez dual cure resin for the last couple boards and REALLY like it. Haven’t added the mekp to it yet but I’ve got a board ready for glassing, so I think I’ll give it a shot from start to finish.
