michael

hi Mick

I would think you could get some by contacting Prof. Greg Deets.I would like to get some too at some point.Check out the InflatableDreamSpeed message board on MSN,that’s what I’m gonna do when I get the extra dough.Check out Greg Deets article in AllAboutSurf.com.if I read it correctly those fins are made from old rescued original molds that were not easy to get.

Shawn

Better get them quads and calfs in shape first.

UDT are the longest and one of the stiffest fins now availible.

I only thought there was one design. whats the general consensus on the 2 designs - custom Duckfeet vs UDT i only ever knew of the UDT design. the duckfeet look more comfortable and have a wider blade. but there is a lot of hype over that original UDT design

i am wanting to use them for bodysurfing.

Now, I’m a kneelo, but those bodysurfers I have asked like the UDTs better. More area=more push.

As far as it goes, I have and like an older pair of UDTs ( with the rubber compound arrangement similar to the new ones) , and the push is considerably more than the plain Duck Feet I kinda gave up on. Have another pair of UDTs with soft footpocket and hard blade and they are just not in the same league for comfort or power.

The duck feet are actually not wider than the UDTs, they are smaller lengthwise and a little narrower- saw you had updated/edited with that question and thanks to the magic of digital photography…

I don’t get it, actually - what’s the deal with fins set up with a hard, stiff fin blade and a soft, very flexy foot pocket? Kinda like installing a 500 HP engine in a vehicle which has the frame made out of Jello. You can have all the power in the world, but ya can’t use it.

The new UDTs, with the rubber compounds arranged intelligently ( firm foot pocket and softer blades) can only be an improvement. Put it this way ( and thanks, Dale) I just ordered 2 pair, one for warm water and fin socks and one a size up for cold water and heavy wetsuit boots. Let alone the snazzy colors…

hope that’s of use

OK so what you saying is there is alot more push out of the UDT design than the duckfeet design.

cool thanks for updating the pictures. always strange when two people are online at the same time on opposite sides of the world. i think i like the UDT after seeing that pic.

Ohhh yes - it’s night and day. The UDT blades are close to 150% the length of the Duck Feet blades and a little wider, so that extra blade area is out there where it does the most good and gives you some serious push. Makes the Duck Feet feel like churchills, almost like having no fins at all.

De nada, it occurred to me that the photos in the Voit pic were a bit misleading as to area/size of the fins themselves. If I had really been thinking, I would have done another shot side by side as opposed to one above the other, which really brings out the blade size difference. so, as the saying goes, ‘on second thought’ I did

Both pairs are size Large, by the way, comfortable with a US size 9 ( extra, extra, extra wide) ) foot and 1mm neoprene fin socks, which is equivalent to a UK size 8.5 ( which I happen to know 'cos I bought new shoes yesterday) . A conversion table for just about all shoe sizes here: http://www.i18nguy.com/l10n/shoes.html#adult which is probably close enough.

It is kind of a kick, bouncing information from all sides of the world, isn’t it.

Best regards

Nice, thanks for all the info guys. now i just have to make sure that i get the right size off that chart. i think i would be about a size 9.5-10 australian, the tags in my shoes are saying between 10-11 US which would make the XL size UDT the right size i think hahaha. gonna have to do some research…

account for possible fin sox or booties…

It’s pretty amazing something that was popular in 1965 can still be considered state of the art today.

Does anyone know when UDT’s were first used regularly?

I bought mine in 1964 while I was skindiving and working for Rec and Parks, Berkeley, on a tip from my cousin, who was a championship spearfisherman.

Ohhh yes, fin socks or boots are a must! A little sand or a pebble or two can make life quite interesting otherwise.

The Churchill pattern fins, also still popular, have been in use since the 1940s, and you got me curious about how long the Duck Feet/UDT pattern fins have been around, so I had a look…

late 1940s? The above referenced photo is dated 1950, with some fins featured that look a lot like UDTs or Duck Feet. And they must have been in use a while before being issued to actual UDT members …

But…they still work. Sometimes, i guess, you just kinda come across a design that does…

hi Lee

what are fin socks like?are they as thick as a regular pair of socks?I have what i thought were fin socks but they are booties with a shoe sole on the bottom for divers,I could wear them as shoes.do you need to go up a size on fins for fin socks?i don’t know a lot about fins, but i like the fact that the UDT’s are such a good design that they keep stick’n around.

New Years Eve 1976
Cow Palace - San Francisco
(Allman Bros. - Marshall Tucker - Lynyrd Skynyrd)
Some thief breaks into my VW, steals my cassette deck and my Duck Feet ...
The next week, at the Haut Shop, I buy the 'New' Churchill Makapuu fins...
Fast Forward to Now...
I'm still using those Churchills, at least a couple times a week, pool swimming...
Mat riding when appropriate...
At the initail offering, I got a set of the 'New' UDT fins...
Tried 'em out...Way too stiff, and way too long...At least for me...
I prefer to have a faster turnover, over more horsepower...
The un-modified UDT's were cramp starters...and less manouverable...
With power tools in hand, I finally got 'em close to where I like 'em...
I ordered a 'new' pair of Churchill Makapuu fins last week..
Still searching for optimum...
Ain't this fun...!!!...

Nice job!

From 1966…

Fin socks are, typically, thin lycra or rubber deals that you wear in your fins to keep the chafe down. Mine are about 1mm nylon-neoprene-nylon like these guys here: http://www.piratescuba.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HFS&Category_Code=FS

hope that’s of use

doc…

yes it is

thanks for the help

awesome flashback Paul!

Fin sock thickness is determined by water temps.

For SF area, about 3mm is sufficient, have no soles for walking (you walk barefeet), put them on at water’s edge.

For colder waters, like Humbolt, I have 5mm fin socks, which increase my foot size from 10.5 to about 12.

The 3mm’s increase foot size about one full size.

I also have 2mm finsox, about one full size.

Don’t see how 1mm can hold up more than a couple of days. That’s thinner than any wetsuit.

I now use cutdown Churchill Makapus’, since I’m outta shape, have great timing and no muscle or conditioning.
