UK Fish Fry : Stokissimo !!!

No one said Manny was an ass…

Geez… A claim jumper is what I’d call him,but in the great scheme of life…none of this amounts to a thumb nail .

I’m glad you guys had a great experience, truly.

And maybe someday Manny and I can meet.

I sure he’s not looking forward to that day.Herb

I’ve met Manny. Shared a beer with him at a Fish Fry in Pacifica a few years ago. A very fun, low key affair. He was a humble gentlemen who gave credit to Pavel as his mentor. I wished he posted over here and shared what he’s learned. Beautiful shapes. Boy’s got talent that’s for sure. Mike

well said, lob…

I wasn’t going to talk about this in public, but I think it will also illustrate Manny’s, and Toby’s character…

I used to work at Channin while pavel was shaping there as a humble finbox, hotcoater, etc. that was well over 6 years ago. The guy remembered me, and was genuinely stoked to see me… crazy? Nah, he is just a great human being.

I didn’t know Manny from jack, or maybe it should be the other way around… Anyway, we started talking about the crazy band, and the english folk, next thing I know he’s looking at my boards, giving feedback/input, and volunteered to email me very specific details about fin set ups etc.

Ended up having dinner with Toby, and Manny, with the girl from Balsa Nova, along with the crew from Scallop at the next table, at the tapas place across the street and we had a very good time, lots of laughs, and they both shared more solid info about shaping/design. Toby even paid!!! How cool is that?! He said it was for all the finboxes I had put in…huh? I’m telling you there is no ego there. Afterwards we went to the JUbe, played a few games of foozeball, and even had a dog pile on Toby, much to everyone’s disbelief.

They both get very embarrassed by comments of admiration, and inspiration. Two very humble guys, for sure.

Thanks to both of them for re-kindling my love of shaping, and for sharing information so freely.

And Marlin Bacon as well. Never met a guy so willing to talk about surfboards, and share ideas/design technique. Awesome.

I think sometimes we build these guys up to be superstars, and then like all celebrities, want to tear them down. They’re just people, with real lives, just like us.

Anyway, my 2p…

you misunderstand the post, read again

I dont talk about the fish fry

that is very cool

I talk about FACTS

so, if you learnt a lot, why dont you jump here when somebody needs help with a lamination or a pigment, etc?

–LOB, yes I understand the time issue

and I understand it very well, cause Im a board builder not only a shaper; Im a student too

you re right about the search engine buttons

hi reverb, no worries mate, i just don’t spend time over internet like i used to (or i want to). I’m just involved in the fish frye as Lob glasser/sander. I’ve learned the job for four years being laminator at the Roper shop down on Morena blvd in SD. I wanna confess that if i don’t answer to questions it’s because i feel like a child compare to big names you cross on swaylock. Plus the 9 hours between our 2 country and most of the time, there are already plenty of surf source.

I had fixed a lot of boards and people who know the shop know what I’m talking about but on the other hand i must have maybe 70 or 80, 100 for the most glass in my background. I have a lot to learn before i can teach a damn thing regarding pigment lamination. Especially when you refer to moonlight glassing, or my friend michael miller, Christenson laminator. I surely know the basic, but I’m still fighting with scratches on my polish you better believe it!

voila, SOCAL have a long and colorfull surf history, that is not the case of everywhere. It’s not often even if you surf down pays Basque that you can see skip frye surfing a 12 foot ultra glide at the cliff, cross Eaton in his van, Ekstrom, Hynson, and others at W n S parking lot, Pavel down OB, Tudor at Blacks or La Jolla shores, etc…
