Ugly Multi-Density

6’6" 15 1/4" x 22 x 16"

XPS rails (struts) with 1.5 pound density EPS core

2 layers of bamboo on deck (90` bias), 1 layer on bottom

4 oz cloth taped on rails, 4 ounce top and bottom double lapped to bamboo border…reinforcements at EPS exposed nose and tail areas.

probox quad (Bing template) with center box for quad/single/2+1 expurrrrments

bagged lams…very very light.

nevermind the ragged bamboo cuts…just focus on the foam…

red fins for top speeds.

taken from the heart of the American Blanks 7’0 LD-02…light entry rocker

with a very relaxed tail rocker…want to keep a decent amount of usable

planing surface (and volume) under my chest since this board is probably

about a foot shorter than anything I usually ride.

you need to get a job

hey totally impressed with your experiments mate

now surf them to distruction and give them to the groms

I blame you for this madness!

8.3 pounds on the digi scale at the local p.o. box store…

that’s about 3.8 kilos.

Now is the time to learn the ancient art of pinlining…

Congrats! Each one looks better than the last; a very good trend. You likin’ the ride?

Hey, you can get your very own digital scale for about $30 at any office store. Then you can

compulsively weigh everything in sight like I do. It’s good to know all your component weights

as you do your build.

Board’s looking good, should be a fun test bed for different fin combos. Make sure they’re ALL

red so you don’t lose any speed.

Did you build a hotwire bow to cut the XPS or just cut it with the keyhole saw? Great job, btw. I’ll be coming over to check it out

When are you going to come up with a fancy logo?

Great work. Are you going to tell them about your new secret rail sauce?

Looks good. Ditto on the pinline idea. Saw you over at “Larry’s fin shop” last week.

Walt, no hotwire…just a couple masonite templates and a cutting bit in my router…we should get a little

pulse of swell later this week.

Jeff, it’s not my sauce recipe, I’d better not say.

Paradox, sorry for the lack of formal introduction…was sort of in a rush to get going. I’m pretty sure I’ve

seen you at that spot in the middle before so I figured I’d get a chance to try your pivot fin eventually.

nice…

but like they say

once you go bam-blue

you…

now aren’t solid foam rails a god-send?

compared to building them out with small chunks of wood like the old days.

although the cork-ply look of paul’s stuff is sure perdy…

wish you could buy blanks like these in a wider variety

like you can get Marko, Ice Nine or Ken’s cut foam

I guess for now we’ll have to build our own PMS blanks

yup it causes PMS

niiice…

looks fun n fast

Next time you see me be sure and say hi. (that spot in the middle?)

Ken can do these.

In fact, what Jeff was alluding to was the idea of using 3lb density EPS on the rails

and 1.5lb density in the core just as I’ve done here with the XPS/EPS.

I had Ken cut me two blanks, one 1.5 and the other 3…same rocker, etc.

I use the offcut from the 3lb for my rocker bed and then a masonite template

and hotwire/endmill to cut the matching pieces.

I can get two ‘cores’ out of the 1.5lb blank and probably rails for 1-1 1/2 boards

for every 3lb blank…if that makes sense.

You are correct, foam rails are much more pleasing to build out and shape, but

there really is something to be said about the all wood rail build out if not only

for pure aesthetics.

Ride report:

Fin setup with front fins in middle of box, 8° cant inserts, rear fins all the way forward at 4°.

Conditions: 2-3ft storm slop mostly closeouts but a few rideable waves.

For the conditions the board had the necessary drive but was incredible loose off the top, was able to pull off a mini-snap i didnt even mean to do and a nice smooth cut-back on the only shoulder I saw during the sesh. Board felt really solid and mobile under my feet, made a few steep drops no problem and paddles like a dream. Really easy to build/keep speed and make it around sections. Two thumbs up! Hope to get more sessions in on it soon.

did it score you a sponsorship or any tail?
