Sad to hear this. He told me once his favorite contest was the SF Fort Point get together. I thought it odd that he would look forward to doning a wetsuit and surfing frigid water under a bridge. Spent an afternoon with him and some of the nephews under an “easy-up” at Queens one day a few years back. So many great stories.

Hi Lowel, must have been a great time at Queens. Last time I saw him in the water was at Malibu in '98 or ‘99 and crowded. I was sitting on the beach and he came walking up and no one is recognizing him. That blew my mind that there weren’t even any Howzits. I waited until he got outside and paddled up to him and shook his hand. He said he only had time for a few. A couple of buddies and I started blocking for him and now I will never forget seeing his big ol’ grin go zipping by. Pure Aloha.
