Update on Dewey Weber Performer original

Recently got off the phone with Shea Weber from the Dewey Weber shop and he said that the board was shaped for team rider Jojo Perrin in the late 70’s early 80’s  It is hard to make out the lettering after all the years but it says “PERFORMER 9’9” WEBER CUSTOM CONCAVE NOSE RIDER" with “JOJO PERRIN” written underneath it.  The only word that is truly hard to make out is “concave” since there is a blemish right above the word.  So I might be wrong on that.  Anyway, it was Jojo’s board that may have seen some competition like some of you mentioned.  Pretty cool to dig into the history of a board I inherited!  Now what to do with it…

Original post below:

Greetings!  A friend of mine told me to come to check out this forum, and I am glad I did.  I am new to the surfing world and I definitely appreciate it's heritage.  With that said, I still am rather clueless when it comes down to it.  With that said, I am hoping maybe I might be able to get some help!  I recently inherited this board from my dad who no longer has space to display it.  Out of curiousity, I researched the board assuming it was a late 60's original.  I looked at pictures online and found some that had the same hatchet fin, and had the same shape, but none that had the same color scheme and graphics. How can I determine if it is an original and it's value?

That's a later model finbox that hadn't been invented in the 60s.  If it is original to the board, your Performer is a reissue - a genuine Weber maybe, just one of the later models and not a 60s model.

Many manufacturers quit making longboards at some point except perhaps on custom orders, and it wasn't until many years later that they started making them again.  Those later boards are typically referred to as reissues.

Yeah, not 60’s.  Looks like the 80’s.

Ahh, should have looked at the fin box.  I’m still learnin!  Thanks for the help.

…yes, more 80s, the tail logo and the deck airbrush is not so 60s…

  • Yes, it's an '80's.  Dewey made longboards throughout the '80's.   Dewey and friends used to stage an annual contest thru the "80's.  I think it was called the Pheif Eck contest.  Not sure I got the name right or why Dewey naned it after him.  I think he was a former team member.  I used to see Dewey's longboards in a shop or two in San Diego around that time.  He was about the only shaper in the South Bay at the time who was still shaping nice longboards.  Hap was gone.  Noll was fishin'.  Bing went off to Colorado.  Yater was still shaping them up in SB and believe it or not Rusty used to shape some really interesting longer boards while he was at Canyon during the '80's.  So your board IS an original.  An original '80's.

looks pretty '80's to me as well based on shape, box. fin, color and graphics. perhaps saw some action in a few of those 80's contests...

Thanks for all the insight!  This is great information regarding the board.  I put an e-mail into the Dewey shop as well to see if they have any info for me as well.  Regardless if they get back to me or not, I’m stoked that you’ve all been really helpful in sorting this out!  Much appreciated!

Just got off the phone with Shea Weber.  This is a late 70’s early 80’s board that was custom shaped for Jojo Perrin.  Not sure if it saw competition or not, but it was his personal board!  Pretty cool to keep solving the history of this board

Very cool!  Jojo was one of the best.
