Thought you guys might find this interesting. Nice piece from Barlo on USA vs. OZ:
“There’s a huge difference between a bar and pub. A
pub is a place to be with your mates and throw back a few pints. A bar
is where you go to get drunk.”
“Aussies evolved in a parallel
universe to Americans. We both had our scoundrel beginnings, our epic
frontier, our land grabs and gold rushes, our government-sanctioned
genocides. But where the Yanks had a bloody Civil War that’s still being
fought in many parts of the country, the Aussies – forced into exiled
detention together – had each other.”
“But as Burroughs once
said: ‘America is not a young land. It is old. And dirty and evil.
Before the settlers, before the Indians. The evil was there. Waiting.’”
An odd piece of writing. Some pubs i wouldn’t let my wife and kids walk into here, and some are very family friendly. Pretty broad generalisation most of it.
haha stereotype much? Guess I am evil for being an american?

…so generalizated than the fu–er say americans etc then Burroughs say America is a young land, etc
so dumb that they dont even know than America is a continent and not ONE COUNTRY
so stupid that in another thread thanks God B Barnfield (that is famous not like me that Im the man “with no name” in this industry) said something like there in San Diego the fellas have a perception of all happens there or around…
the world is big and for sure bigger than S Calif
even the industry is bigger
Brazil have the biggest surf industry (but they lack on style and fine shapers); all bigger there.
We have pubs here that are family friendly as well. They are called microbreweries, and the beer is probably better than what you get in most "pubs." Here's a few that have locations in the San Diego area.
Note: I haven't been to Australia, so I may be off base. I did go to London once, and went to a few pubs. The beers were excellent, but I wasn't exactly sure how you distinguish a pub from a restaurant. There were pubs that served Indian food, Thai food, Pizza, and traditional English food. What is the exact definition of a pub?

with your mates and throw back a few pints. A bar is where you go to get
drunk. In America you enter from harsh daylight into the dim confines
of the bar, and the regulars check you out in the time-honored fashion
of the Old West. They’re sizing you up, checking to see what hardware
you’re packing. Look at somebody the wrong way and you might be called
on to draw. Otherwise, finish your drink and get moving, pardner.”
Sounds like someone hasn’t left his cubicle in a while…

Boy would i kill to do a microbrewery tour in the US, you guys have it the right way, especially your excise tax laws. Microbrewery/Brewpubs are catching on here, and there are some good ones, so things are looking good!
Getting a few waves would be a bonus too!!.
Depends where the pub is really. Industrial towns, hmmm leave the wife and kids at home. Near the city and beach, bring your wife and kids, and an extra wallet haha
I have a few rules when dealing with our Australian friends… if you are out drinking with an Australian rugby team, they will most likely get into a fight and you will be expected to fight alongside them.
If your surfing with Aussies, if you do not take a steep, late drop then you will be mocked and likely not get another set wave for some time.
As for the difference between a bar and a pub… really is there any difference?
i agree tblank but id be a bit of a party pooper if i was complaining about 2 threads. but yeah, im over the us against them. nothing but trouble imo.
the US an Aus are vast and diverse cultures and its silly to generalize. who did what first is also irelevant, being mostly in the public domain and more for the fact that just about everythings been done before and these things seem to evolve simultaneously
