Using airtravel inside Costa Rica...

All apologies for a quick non-design question: anybody used the small airlines like SANSA or Nature Air to bop around Costa Rica? If so, how strict are they on the “nothing over 7ft” and “25lbs per passenger” thing? I’ve always used a rental car but would like to speed things up if possible on my next sojourn. If anyone has experience on this, please let me know what you think.

VERY strict, don’t even try its a waste of time.

Sansa flies the same type of plane to all stops, NatureAir on the other hand, you never know what size plane you’ll get- on one flight we were on a 6 seater were 2 were occupied by the pilots- no surfboards allowed. Sansa did allow us to go over Wt. limit. I fell in love with CR during the past four years - great surf, great people - so much that I bought a piece of paradise.

I agree, I just came back from Mal Pais in December. Flew Nature Air. Had a 6’6. Getting from San Jose, no problem…small palne but no one was on it…

I called Nature air 2 days before returning to San Jose, they said no problem.

Arrived at the airport and they said…no surfboards allowed, full flight.

Had to put it on a later flight with Sansa, it just made it to the international airport in time…the flight was delayed by 2o minutes…if it wasn’t, I be 1 surfboard less…Sansa is more reliable than Nature Air, but the 7’0 rule is definetly enforced. Don’t risk it!!!

Have a sick time…

Thanks for the replies, guys. So, if my fiance and I take a couple 6’10" in a 7’ taco bag, you think we’d be OK on SANSA?

I love CR as well. Went to school there for a semester back in college, going back this spring to get married! Staying for the honeymoon and this is when we plan on flying around down there (Puerto Jimenez to San Jo to Tambor, etc.)

That’s what I used…the 7’0 Taco Double. Great bag!!!

You should be fine with Sansa. I’d give em a call ahead of time just to double check how crowded the flight is your’e gonna be on. Nature Air and Sansa are both good airlines, but Sansa has it more dialed as far as surf travel goes. Bigger better, quieter planes as well. Have a sick time and a wonderful wedding and honeymoon. If your’e in Mal Pais, stay at hotel Milarepa. Right on santa teresa beach, amazing chef, really romantic little bungalows on the beach.

My wife and I loved it!!!

Thanks tons for the info, Adam. We’ll look into the Milarepa…
