Using Joint Compound as a filler

I think I read somewhere on Swaylock’s that you can use joint compound to fill a bubble or hole before you glass the blank. Does anyone have any experience with this? Do you notice any difference in strength, color, or adhesion? How big of a hole can you fill? My question is because I have a blank that the planer opened up a 3/4 inch hole near the tail. I don’t want to make the board any shorter than it currently is but if I have to I will cut her on down. Advice?

totally fixable. i’ve found that the “non-shrinking” type of joint compound works better. it doesn’t contain as much water and drys to a perfectly sand-able consistency. it even looks like foam! no problems yet with adhesion or color, strength, etc. this stuff has saved me many times. good luck. kirk

Lite weight painters spakel works for small stuff, but if it is a large hole you might try cutting in a piece of leftover foam. If done corectly it will be almost invisable.
