Is the density through the blank the same? I am looking to get a well rockered step up 6’ 7" from the 6’8" JJ blank and it looks like 3/4" or more will have to be mowed from the deck. I have just got some of these blanks from Seabase in the UK so haven’t used them yet. At 3" thick and a concave moulded in I am assuming it will be common to take loads off the deck. I was hoping to get this done today (6 45am here in Wales).
Yes.I have a JJ blank being shaped for now in 2.3 lb. foam and it looks consistent thru out the blank . I also have the same blank which I am shaping myself and love it. It finish sands like it could be mistaken as pu foam. A person from Marko indicated to me that they may be offering some blanks with parabolic stringers in the near future. Good luck with your blank .
Mine are 1.9 as only these and 1.5 are available here as yet. Shaped pretty nice with some beads pulled out next to the stringer( using planer not grit drum ). Out of it we got a 6’7" with 6" nose and 3" tail rocker although the tail is pretty darned thin. There seems to be a flat spot in the blank in the rocker curve about 24" from nose. Curious! This has the 3/16 bass wood stringer which was nice and straight. The only prevous EPS board was from a Segway with the plastic stringer which I glassed 6oz bottom and 2x 6oz top. It has a nice spring to it. The 6’3" segway blank had nice rocker curves. This Marco blank seems to have less spring. I shall be glassing with 2x4oz and 3x4oz over the weekend.
I am tempted to try Uncle D’s colour/fill/seal with qcell, epoxy and glass bubbles. The only epoxy pigment I have is Wests turquoisy blue and some white.
I do not thinks that my [2.3] foam will hve to be sealed .I am not finished yet but it is showing indication that it is smooth enough not to need sealing. Please post how the flex and strength turn out with the glassing schedule that you mentioned.I have not seen the 1.9 lb. foam shaped before. Again good luck.
Here is an update. Completed the 6’7" but during it turned out with 3 x 4oz top but also with 3 x 4oz bottom as well because I misunderstood the postcuring and found the bottom glass had bubbled badly along the stringer so I ground it down, patched and put another layer of 4oz on. Final weight with fin boxes (4way), tail pad and waxed up came in at 7lb. My previous board a 6’3" with lightweight glasson fins and tailpad with 2 x 6oz top and 1x6oz bottom is 6 1/2 lb.
Using the extra layers of 4oz has made the board feel pretty robust as far as denting goes but I think I have lost quite a bit of the springyness I liked on the 6’ 3". Although difficult to make a direct comparison I think I prefer the plastic stringer in the Segway as opposed to the wood in the Marko. It felt to me it had a bit more life!
As a novice I found glassing three layers harder to get nice laps around the tight curves at the tip and the tail. Also I did see in researching past posts that there was a recommendation to fold back the layers of cloth and poor some resin directly onto the blank to aid soaking through multiple layers. This is bad advice.Don’t do it.The RR Epoxy has no difficulty soaking through 3 layers.
