anybody know where to get a single lamp that would set off uv resin. preferably something cheap. i got a line on a tanning bulb for $19 but i have to have a tanning bed (so he said). what type fixtures would these bulbs use? i was hoping it was like a fluorescent fixture. thanks in advance.
fiberglass hawaii has them. $20 each. they are standard 4ft 40watt tubes. (which fit in standard/cheap shop light fixtures) they are sooo handy !

Hey man! Shouldn’t be a problem using UV tubes in standard fittings - we glass suncure boards in a box regularly… Of course the sunbed salesman would try to stitch you up with something overpriced- but what is this-Beverly Hills!!! Box has tubes top & bottom. I’ve also used an old fashioned tanning lamp- a big round thing I fitted to a giant silverfoil lined funnel which enclosed the whole glassing stand after squeegeeing!!! are u doing suncure polyester or epoxy? If epoxy, you may want to open the box periodically to check the glass overlaps tail & nose, coz’ the resin can drain out if not suncure.Any questions? http://www.speedneedle.com.au
I’ve used a couple of others with success. The old '60’s tanning lights work great for ding repair, they use a mercury vapor stick type lamp with aluminum reflector. Mine came from a thrift store complete with tripod stand and built in timer for ding repairs. Another tip from a discussion you might find in the archives is the large pole mounted security lamps using Mercury Vapor bulbs. Most TruValue hardware stores carry a complete fixture for $25-$35.00. They can be be ceiling mounted above your glassing rack. Whatever you do, protect your eyes when using any UV light source, this is serious business. Tom S.
What about grow and/or reef tank lights. I know in the past when I’ve had coral reef tanks in my house I’ve had to get actinc or high output flourescent tubes so that the coral could process the UV rays and the calcium. Would these work, if so, it appears they’d be cheaper then the Tanning bed lights and because of the od shapes of tanks you are able to get balasts, custom end caps with seals so they dont’ get junk in them and various types of housings and reflectors.
yeah, the ones from from fiberglass hawaii are “super actinic’s”, a.k.a. reef tank bulbs.
Howzit Brian, I use the Fiberglass Hi. bulbs in Fixtures I get at Wal-mart for $8.00, they work just fine. Aloha, Kokua
