hi, if i glassed a board under normal flouro lights would this set of a resin with a sun bake/ uv resin cure? If i changed the lights to uv black lights like to ones in a disco, would this set of the sun bake. I know putting the board out side in the sun would do the trick, but wot i was worried about was moving the glassed board out side wilst the resin was still wet. finger marks all in the rail etc. limited for room for a seperate glassing area, my shaping bay would be the go. i thought of using the sun bake to give me a bit more time while im learning the art of glasssing.
im in exactly the same boat as you, i found it hard to find anywhere dark enough to glass with uv so i just use a 4 foot uv bulb in my shaping room that fits into the normal fluoro fixture, bought it from my local light shop, set me back $50 bucks but works great, worth every cent. helps having plenty of time to glass the board and then just turn the black light on when your done.
thanks pal, do you glass with normal flouro bulbs in or in a darkend room?
yeh just glass with normal fluoros.
hey merrit
how long does it take to cure with the black light bulb?
I tried this about 10 years ago. The resin will kick under a flourescent blacklight but it will take quite a while and it won’t kick as hard as it would in direct sunlight. I’ve even had problems with direct sunlight during the winter due to the low angle of the sun not producing enough UV to get that hard cure. Plus, moving a 4ft fixture with 2 florescent tubes to properly expose a 6ft or 7ft or 9 ft board is kind of a hassle. If I was still doing a lot of UV resin I’d use tanning bed bulbs with the longer ballast and a reflector to spread the UV around more.
Use Saran Wrap or plastic food handlers' gloves to pick up, move or flip your freshly laminated blank. You can drape a loose piece of Saran Wrap ove your glassing rack when you flip the blank. This will prevent the freshly lammed blank from sticking to the rack.
might as well just use mekp cat
the sun is the way for uv
use fresh gloves or poormans condom (saran wrap) for handling the board
Why would you ever finger touch wet rails? I shape PU & glass UV-PE in the same tiny room. After laminating, just lift it off the racks with gloved hands on the bottom/the dry side. A good tight lamination will not have any resin to move around, you’ll be fine moving it between inside glassing rack to outside curing rack.
hey fellas
listen to bud and ken dont complicate it.

Howzit standishowl, I would call the shop you bought the UV resin from and ask them if they sell UV bulbs. That's what I did with Fibrglass Hi and the 4 ft bulbs cost me about $18 each and I had four dbl fixtures that kicked and cured the resin almost as fast as the sun. I only used them when it was raining because the sun works best. Aloha,Kokua
kensurf takes a couple of hours to cure and flip and let the laps cure ready for cutting and then turn the normal lights back on.
how does everybody cut their laps with the board out in the sun, mine cured in less then 2 minutes my first board i did in the sun?
depends how bright the sun is,,,but,,,
after the bottom kicks,, flip it for about 10 to 30 seconds maybe more ,, take it inside to cut
