Just wanted to pass along a minor disaster I had today. I get my UV Cure Resin from two different sources depending on convenience. We will call them Supplier A and Supplier B. Nothing but good things to say about both suppliers as I’ve used both for quite a long time.
Supplier A ships their UV resin in a black UV Resistant platic jug like this and I have never had a problem. The resin pours nicely and I even refill these sometimes with the resin I get from supplier B:
Supplier B ships their UV Cure resin in metal gallon containers similar to the one pictured below except for one small problem…the spout part is made of a non-UV resistant plastic with a pull out inner seal.
So here is what happened. Today I glassed a board and I finished off one of the black jugs of resin part way into the hot coat. I grabbed an unopened gallon of resin in the steel can and pulled the seal. To my surprise there was another seal inside. Perplexed for a second, I realized what had happened. At some point between point a and point b the jug of resin had seen some sunlight. Perhaps walking to the car or in the car on the drive home. Otherwise the resin was stored in a dark place where I’ve stored UV resin for the past decade without incident. This created a stalagtite of sorts of cured resin inside the jug and all sorts of little boogers in the rest of the resin. In all I’d say a pint of resin was cured inside the can. As it was the only gallon of resin on hand I made due. I’ll have some extra sanding to do needless to say. My plan is to strain the rest of this gallon so I can finish off this board and I suppose I’ll use the rest of it for ding repair.
Here is a pic of some of what was inside my gallon of resin:
Moral of the story, if you buy UV Cure resin look for the places that put it in the widely available Black UV Resistant F-Style contaners they can buy from U-Line or any other supplier of shipping containers. If Supplier B reads this, I hope you change shipping containers.
Rant over.
