Velzy Memorial

An amazing gathering of the Tribe at Doheny this afternoon. A thousand? Probably more, came to celebrate the life of Dale Velzy; from hot rods to hot curls, from vaquero to legend. Another thread was cut that holds that golden age to the rest of us.

I missed most of the testimonials but the paddle-out made up for it. Bumping rails with Kirk Putnam, Skip (Easternpacific) and his wife Sally, Herb Spitzer, Skip Frye, Wayne Rich, Randy French and hundreds of other familiar faces I couldn’t put names to. The P-51 Mustang fly-over gave it a hot rod touch that seemed perfect.

On my way back to the beach, a nice little comber came our way. A squadron of 9’+ longboards and me on the little travel board pulling hard. Must have been a breath from Kauai that pushed me in…

Jim Phillips says hi to all.

Dale must have approved since we had a Tsunami warning at 9:30 pm that evening; nothing happened but several larger-than-normal sets came in.

…Lee,

You looked very youthful and sharp!

…Jim,

It was good to see all the appreciation and aloha spirit for a pioneer of our community. Surfers came from all over to bid farewell, remember the good times and celebrate the lifestyle and Dale.

Man that was one Bitchin send off for Dale. good to see you Tom, Easternpacific,LeeV sorry I didnt see Herb, hey Herb buddy hang in there. So many legends and heros of mine there.High point was the P-51 fly by and sippin some real moonshine with Yater and Jim Mahoney.

Sorry, I missed you. It seemed everywhere I turned, I was searching the memory banks for names to go with faces.

Herb,

Deepest condolences.

There are those who believe there is a fifth horseman, who heals what the first four have wrought (conquest, war, famine, and death, all the destruction that men can do). He was there the day of the memorial. Look for him again in your dreams.

I’m still flashing back on that day. Witnessing the truth of our short history. Giving thanks to the many, many teachers who learned from Dale Velzy.

The bikers where there, elbow to elbow with the trailriders, next to the hotroders and woodies, surrounded by thousands of surfers and paddlers. Paddling out, there was LeeV, Herb, helping some drunk guy stay upright on his longboard, K.P. and his nice Tom Mix hat. Endless faces and names. The Velzy paddleboards…wow, stopped in my tracks over and over.

We all touched the travelboard.

Life is short

The drunk guy was Dale's nephew.Obviously not a surfer. With help from a surfergal friend of mine Elaine, we held him up for the duration, with only one wipeout....PLUS !!! I got a bitchen ride at the end of the ceremonies from outside all the way down the beach into the shore ....all-by-my-self! THANKYOU Dale!

…Man,What an VERY up and down week for me…personally that is.And just went you think it can’t get any worst it pours down again like a dam breaking out.

…Took my dog Shelby…my model for my surf/skate label, also my best friend, protector…companion …to the vets yesterday…she has less than a month or two left in her…she’ll be 21 this coming Christmas.Herb

I was reading the herb-post about shelby as the flush of lightened blood flow tickled up one side of me and down the otherfolowed by that chicken skin feeling

I came to a fuller understanding of what Long John Silver meant by “shiver me timbers”

we can be shaken to the marrow if allow ourselves to be sensitive

good dog shelby …good dog…meet ya arround the bend

Some photos trickling in

Howzit E-pacman, Stopped by BASA's shop yesterday to drop off some lams and he was showing me pics he took at the memorial. he just got a dig camera and a stand alone printer and he wants me to set it up for him, so I'll see if he'll let me post some of the pics he took since he's got some good ones also. Aloha,Kokua

I don’t think I know much about scanning.

I’ll work on, maybe, higher resolution ?
