Veneer inlay

Hey what do you all think of my veneer inlay? I thought it looked good … have to finish striping around it etc.

pic is blurry

but it looks good

wood type?

why the stripe down the center?

did you vacuum bag it on?

glass over it?

It’s actually two pieces of veneer … line in the middle to hide the seam. Yep I vacuum bagged everything, 2 layers each side of 6 oz. S-2 with the colored epoxy, then the veneer, then painted the stripes and put on a tailblock, basted the wood and let it set, then put on my logos and bagged a clear layer of 6 oz. S-2 over each side.

Surprisingly light for such thick glass, I’m actually concerned it may be too light for my liking … but the hotcoat will add some weight then we’ll see how it looks. I can always put another layer on if necessary but I’m sure it will be close enough to the 25 lb. I was looking for.

The veneer is eucalyptus burl. Sweet looking stuff, picked it up from veneersupplies.com for $40 or so. Definitely needs to be bagged though, this is raw veneer with no backing and it’s not super flexible or flat out of the package.

25 lbs ???

is that a 12’ gun? or what?

how thick is the veneer?

advice for you…

next time vac the wood to the foam then glass the bottom and cut lap to the wood, that makes it even

then glass the deck and wrap around the bottom

less work, bag one time

It’s actually a 9’8" gun … lol …

That is a great idea cut lapping to the veneer … next time I should try that.

I think the laminate ended up so much lighter because of the vacuum bagging … the breather sucked out all but the necessary epoxy … should be crazy strong with 3 layers of 6 oz. S-2 and veneer to boot …

I’m wondering if I should vent it … it’s 2.5lb EPS … I dunno what do you think?

should of went with poly to get weight

to be safe put a vent in

one good hour in the sun and…pooof!

Well the last gun I made used this blank … and I ended up around my target weight … but that was glassed with Texalium and a layer of E-glass over top.

Maybe it’ll weigh in after the hot coating etc., I haven’t weighed it yet it just feels light in my hands.

I used the OFishl longboard boxes this time, that you set in the foam and glass over … I like the way they turn out … and the leash cups too, glass over and sand through. Nice stuff.

I have an 11’ reto gun in the que

I will get the blank in a few weeks

I will veneer the deck and resin tiger stripes on the bottom and rails pinlined at the wood

Im thinking 3 layers of 6 oz deck and bottom

what do you think?

Sounds good … I can’t believe how much tougher this S-2 is compared to the E-glass … I didn’t think it would be much different but it really seems stronger. I glassed a couple patches of S2 and E glass to compare, and the E-glass breaks much easier.

I got a deal on a whole roll so I reckon I’ll be making a few boards out of it …

where are you located

Im in HB socal

I’m in Central Wisconsin. Was in your neck of the woods last week. Well kinda, LA area anyway. And SD area.

they got big waves in Wisconie?

Not the biggest I’m afraid … head high is about the most we get … sometimes bigger but usually sloppy when it is.
