just wondering if anybody has tried using venetian blind ceder strips for hollow board decks? i have a blind guy (not literally) next to my work and i just realised this stuff could be perfect. i spend ages getting it to that size anyway.
i can get it off him any size without the stain on it. its only 4mm thick but if i glass it both sides, would it suffice?
If the guy is prepared to mill the timber to the thickness you specify then yes, it can be used for HWS.
I’ve been looking around at the same thing and noticed that Cedar used for oiled / uncolored blinds (i.e. They are not painted to hide the grain) is usually a pretty premium grade… grain is very close together and straight, very few knots or imperfections.
Usually the cedar for blinds is 2mm thick so if you are able to request the timber to be milled to a thickness of 4mm to 6mm (depending on your preference for thickness) then it should all be good. 2mm will be too thin for HWS, but a good thickness for compsand.
Sorry I have’nt used it, but its occurred to me also…
Its really nice stuff. Those blinds are also often Paulonia, and both woods are light, strong and more water resistant than Balsa.
In a nutshell…utterly no reason why it would’nt work. I haven’t done a hollow, but for a sandwich on EPS core, 4mm is way thick…I’d say yes, with a solid inner and outer glass, you’de get away with it at 4mm.
