Venturi surfboard wing fins

good on ya mala !

here is what I want to try tomomorrow ...

wings on the outside , pointed DOWNwards this time

wavefinres21.jpg

if the swell hangs around , and the wind backs off in the morning [unlike the forecast but hey ...'they' get it wrong , sometimes] , I will try it again , but with an M3  back fin tomorrow...

anyway , as is my catchphrase ..."wait and see" eh ?  [tomorrow could quite easily turn pear-shaped from the get-go !]

How adjustable is the horizontal part ?

there is straight ahead up and down about 5 to 10 degree for each spline tooth.

***

Is it something that can be changed in the surf?

you could change it in the surf but you would have to carry the screw driver

***

Can you move them from the outside of the fins to the inside ?

that could be done. the wings can be change from side to side tip up tip down

***

Do you reccommend usnig them on QUads?

yes you can but just a twin fin has a lot of hold there is a lot of things to experment with. If it successfull I will make a smaller one for a quad set up for the back and I will make different shaped wings

mark ,

have you tried the wings pointing downwards , or did you find it went better with them pointing UPwards ?

also , the twin fin set you mentioned ...

how much deeper and wider are they than the thruster side fins you sent me , please ??

last question [for now !] how big a back fin / which one , do you usually use with them , for a thruster setup , please , mate ?

  cheers

  ben

It is great to see you try them out. It will be good to see you out in some bigger clean surf. The fin will like big surf the wing is better faceing out to capatilize on the extra hold. The wings can be swaped from side to side this will put the wing tip up or down. I tried to make the fin as smooth as possible so it would not be any real danger if there is any sharp spots just sand it a little. A few guys over here in Queensland are surfing them not many people know about them.

Yes every thing is ok to show in pictures.

It is great to hear the feed back as it is only one experment of many that need to be made.

Thomas Edison had to make a thousand experments before he perfected light bulb.

If things go well then we can make more experments

what size / kind[s] of boards are the guys in queensland trying them in , mark ?

I have refrained from putting them in the mal so far , as I want to feel what the wing and fin shape are doing more than I would with a longer rail line in small surf. *

Hence the [so far] smaller trailer fins I have tried them with ...

* edit ...the next board I want to try them in will be the 6'6 walden.  Then , when the waves get better / my paddling , too, I'd like to try them in the 6'1 orange stub , and "maybe" even ??  the 5'8 'bushfire fish' , IF I'm feeling fairly motivated / fit ?  and waves are right for it ...

HAVE  you had any of your crew try them in a wide , fishtailed type board yet , Mark ?

  cheers !

  ben

front down is best i think in a biger wave but every thing is (( expermental )). As the fin tries to pull the back of the board down it does not want to do this I think it causes it to try to escape bye propelling itself foward on the open face a bit like pumping a board. Plus this also assists in helping to sink the rail on a turn…I think I will learn more as well with the fin being experimented with. It is all very new to me as well.

They seem to stick them in what ever they ride. I have had them in my 7ft2in.

With the wing on the out side will be good on a fish as it will give it more hold in bigger surf.

I made this realy wide board once made like the old stinger the shaper said it would spin out. The shapper was right it did spinout in all surf (the shaper was Nev Hyman back then he worked for Nielsen Brothers), the board was only good for land fill brand new. But after I put the wing fin on it held and was the best board for catching waves it was like a wave hog board. The board never spun out after that.

....interesting stuff !

did you get any photos of [them in] the  Brothers Neilsen "stinger " ??

Well, I'm off for the early[ish night] now , so hopefully I can hit it early tomorrow morning . I will check in on this thread again tomorrow ...catchya then,  Mark !...keep up the good work and experimenting , I LOVE that !

pray for rideable good sized waves in the morning , eh ?

  cheers !

  ben

Malaroo and Wavefin, I got your PMs and I have replied and I thank you both for your generous offers.

Very much in the spirit of Sways........thanks guys.

nice thread wave fin !

i wish you the very best in you venture.

looks trippy...........i'll have to give it a try sometime.

herb

wooo !!

....looking forward to hearing YOUR feedback on the fins next , then , Brett !!

we still have three days [forecast] of HOWLING onshores and unrideable surf to get through until hopefully it [forecast] turns "offshore ?all day? ?" , on friday

....'wait and see' ....  [ just like 'hydrodynamica' , eh ?!]

 cheers !

  ben

friday here is looking the goods , herb

come over if you're free .... [maybe we could do a fin swap ...thrillkill's for wavefin's ?  ]

cheers mate !

 ben

I nearly choked on my dinner reading that!

its dangerous reading and eating at the same time , mala

[maybe that's why chicks say "men can only do one thing at a time" ???  [....as if THAT'S  a "bad" thing anyway?] ]

  cheers

[....careful with that chicken bone ! ] ben

Looking forward to geting the fins and posting reviews. Ive got a heap of boards to test them in so it'll be months of fun swapping them round.

Got the nuclear fuel rods for the flying saucer, flew around the lake today, seems to be working. Going to fly down the coast to find a place to live. Surf everyday in the future. Got over my mystery illness, for now, will make the most of it.

Wingfins, wavefins, Bills fin, kiteys holiday and that comment MrChipper? Its been a big week on Sways.

Hopefully a wavefin report from me Saturday night.

and you ain't even tried surffoils cornchippers yet , mala ...

life is looking better already eh ? .....

" Got the nuclear fuel rods for the flying saucer, flew around the lake today, seems to be working. Going to fly down the coast to find a place to live. Surf everyday in the future"

  that's the way !!

good luck with landing your flying saucer somewhere where people won't notice ....just please remember to wear you foil hat , and cover your fins for secrecy sake eh mate ?

  cheers !

Ok, I’ve got a ride report, the moment you’ve all been waiting for …

I have to tell you that I haven’t communicated with MrWavefin to manipulate any opinions, I notice his reference to Thomas Edison’s well known statement that it took over 10,000 experiments to figure out how to make a lightbulb. I’m assuming MrWavefin understands the concept of conception, growth and development to maturity. He obviously realizes that by giving the fins to a few people “he doesn’t know,” that they have a responsibility to readers and the readers will get a genuine critique, that will help develop a range of viable fins and give the tester credibilty for their honesty. So criticism is of value to aid in that development of a range of sellable fins, not a personal sling at his design abilities.

(His next post will probably read something like this. malaroo, send the fins back, Your Fired!)

I flew the flying saucer down to the coast under the cover if darkness. Swell size according to windguru website 1.2 metres, Low tide 6.20am .20  (very low) essential for small waves at my spot of choice. Waves were very sucky over a rocky point, not much room for error on take off. By the way, the thread, (“Anyone interested in a new fin design” posted by Bill Thraillkill) has hilarious references to foil hats remote controls and blue bags over the fins with gold ties, I did away with all that … after all the batteries were flat in remote for the foil hat. (might as well have been Lead Lined) (thankyou Mr Curry thankyou!)

Testing these wavefins on this session was done on a belly board, (see pics below added in after chippies questions in next post,) don’t laugh about the bellyboard, its surfed similar to when I ride a stand up board, same principals. Unlike a boogie. Been riding bellies since 1994, more than stand up lately.

1st Wave, sunrise, no-one out, waves about as high as the roof racks on your car.

Paddle take off look down the wave, stare at rocks, see (in my mind) the bottom turn I have to make or land on rocks, pull a turn that pushes the tail out for drive and nose in. Tail slips a tiny bit, (not spin out) no drive, wipe out, Wave passes, I sit on rocks, dumbfounded! With normal FCS fins that wouldn’t happen. It doesn’t happen.

MrWavefin previously spoke about a board not spinning out, Thats a bit different to what I experienced here, in my case, it was a lack of a desired response after a slow drop on takeoff and then a sudden whip sideways in the pocket of the wave to try and get drive out of the fins.

Paddle out, think, think, Plan to take off more across wave, like on a longer board.

2nd wave, Take off, take off becomes too critical, only way out is the same whip, It ends with same result. On the “rock lounge.”

3rd wave, Take off, looking further away from critical zone to bottom turn, turn, no problems, then get this incredible boost going up out of the turn. WTF? never ever have I experienced that type of a boost out of a turn. It came when I didn’t expect it. With normal fins you get a thrust during the turn, this was as I came up the wave face. Then I turned trimmed down and picked a “race the wall line”. The board picked up speed and became very solid. So it lost its looseness, to do rail to rail turns, (but  I didn’t need to do rail to rail turns, the turbo boost was switched on and I was flying). I had to break it out of this “track”, to do a cutty, First turn,  OK, second turn OK,  Pull out, again this boost upwards. (I’d like to say I did a backflip somersault, but I didn’t)

Question 1 ***** MrWavefin, if the thinness of the stem of the fins there to aid in the breaking out of the speed track to do turns?

Paddle out, thinking, thinking. The boost comes when the board is not turning side ways but turning up or down. (So I thought)

3rd Wave

Critical take off, back on the rocks.

Paddle out, thinking thinking? What happens if I try rail to rail.

4th wave

Critical take off, hold an “aim down the line” direction. make it, try rail to rail, absolutely no drive, waves passes me, trying rail to rail boosts, while white water on my back (normally like wind on a sail) Hmmmmm …  too much lack of response, (slight slipping) Bail out before “getting rocked” (back on the rock lounge)

Paddle out, thinking, thinking … Down the line surfing, where you surf lines as if on a long board that rockets along without pumping, just choose your lines well and go for critical placement on the wave.

5th wave

Forgot the plan, surfed with a few rail to rail pushes that didn’t get a response, got a boost going from top to bottom, (the other way, not climbing this time) without turning.

6th wave

Take off, stayed high in the wave, aimed like a mal, gentle turn down, the turbo boost kicks in gentle turn up, turbo boost kicks in, race a wall with gentle turns up and down, its a rocket. Its a f****** rocket!

SO THATS WHERE THE FINS COME TO LIFE. PICK A LINE AND PLACE YOURSELF IN THE ZONE. ITS LIKE SOMEONE FLICKS A SWITCH AND YOUR HANGING ON FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE!

The rest of the session was doing that … For me? That’s not my style, but I know many who surf that way. These fins would really put a smile on their face. Its a surfing style that doesn’t require working the board rail to rail, but chooses placement and lines as the means of riding the wave.

Well that’s my opinion, I’m sure now that I have said that, MrChipper and Surfoils, will say I must be on drugs and they found the opposite … I can only tell it as I see it. I apologize to those who see it different to me but, but I will listen intently to what they have to say.

Also, big waves, different story, plenty of speed from the word go.

My recommendations to MrWavefin

Another model (another $5,000)

I don’t know if it will work, and I don’t know if MrWavefin has already tried it or something like this, its just what I would like to try.

  1. Normal fin shape. Typical FCS Sunny Garcia type of shape, or G3’s, or GAM’s etc.

  2. Flat on the inside, (like all side fins)

  3. Same wings, same method of attachment.

  4. Rear fin to have wings either side, maybe sliding slot method, to be able to flip them over.(or take out he fold and have them fixed?

If Mr Wavefin lets me? …

Question 2 ***** MrWavefin, Can I (will you let me) modify the fins I have, to the above description (free of charge ofcourse),

Question 3 *****MrWavefin, do you know what bonds to the substance the fins are made out of? epoxy? fibreglass?

Ok, there it is, an honest report, I hope it works well for you Mr Wavefin (by the way, I’m an industrial designer CNC CAD/CAM background) … pickme, pickme!

q:

were you bellyboarding , then , malaroo ?

  cheers for your feedback

  the wave ...

  a left or a right ?

  your board [s]

how long / wide / thick ....the rocker , and bottom and tail shapes ?

do you stand up or lie down on them , mainly ?

 the fins ...

1. were the ' wings' pointing upwards , or downwards , when you rode them ?

2. parallel to the board's bottom , or angled ?  up or down ?

3. try flipping them over , to see if the winged part on the INSIDE[S] does it for you , perhaps

the waves ....

try them in a head high beachie too , perhaps ?

[plenty of good ones of THOSE  , south of 'beerfan'  country [and BEFORE !]

last question [for now , because my rocket is waiting for liftoff] ....

YOUR SPACESHIP ...

...have you got any PHOTOS , please ?

[ I'd like to see how it compares to Mr. Squiggle's ?]

   cheers , matey !

  ben

p.s. -

okay ....ONE more question then ... because I know how much people like [ignoring] my questions !...

is there any chance you could copy and paste this ride review of yours , to the 'wavefins test ride thread ' too , please , mala ?
