Venturi surfboard wing fins

Wavefin

My friend will contact you through your website, he’s in Canberra for another two weeks working (three weeks or maybe a month). He is very keen, you’ll have to calm him down a bit. I hope this works out for you both, he loves alternative innovative stuff and is in his late 40’s and is a surfer and keen skateboarder. He doesn’t expect to be paid.

Nice website!

Hi,

Just the plane insane of fin placement experments.

Wave fin

Just checked the youtube clips,

What combination of fins have you found that worked …  especially using a convensional board?

Also do the wavefins have a flat inside edge?

When the fins are set up as a thruster (wavefins wings either side) does it slip on a bottom turn?

The main fins are foiled both sides and so are the wing they are foiled both sides.

Depends how things go I will have different wing shapes made I would love to make all sorts of shapes different foils.

It is like say edison eventing a light bolb you would need to do lots of experments.

I just did some thing I am sure it can be improved on.

So many people would have better ideas than me of improvement.

The first original one I made from aluminium had no main fin just a rod of steel ( 9mm at its widest ) egg shape for aero dynamics going down to the wing mount at the bottom check it out on a ruler you will find that is like no fin at all it was made 34 y ago.

The only thing that gave any hold was the wing and it was not that big either by menory and I did take of at burleigh heads with it on a very big day. It must have been big, there was only 2 of us out just my mate and myself. I made the bottom hand turn no worries on a wave some where between 6 and 8 feet and I was going fast and it cut back no problems at all I came back into the foam ball and I just got shot out again I was amazed so that is why I have made the fin to test it out.

I know by world standards that was not so big a wave but that is nearly as good as it gets in Australia.

But it amazed me and it is hard to put it into words how it worked.

In some month to come I am going to make a one of aluminium Adjustable Wing Twin Fin like the very first and display it i think it will amaze people.

Interesting, reminds me of the wing on the fin of a high end slalom water ski.

malaroo here

Mr Wavefin sent me a set overnight

deleted duplicate post … hmmmm happens a lot.

Excellent

We have patience until then cool man. What a set of hot rods.

Hi Wavefin, Love the fins and the idea.

Lots of questions for you ...

How adjustable is the horizontal part ?

How many angles are available and whats the angle difference between each position ?

Is it something that can be changed in the surf?

Can you move them from the outside of the fins to the inside ?

Do you reccommend usnig them on QUads?

Can 2 sets be used as a quad?

I did some resin fumblings in 2008   http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/sidebites-side-fins-86-degrees-lift

But I put them on the inside of the fins...

I found my ones suffered because I glued them on and couldnt adjust them..

Id like to see what happens with each side fin set at a slightly different angle for forhand and backhand turns...

Best of luck with the fins, I reckon you'll do well.

thanks heaps wavefin for the pair you sent me too !!

I realised AFTER the surf , when I came and saw this thread , that I had cleverly placed the winged part on the INSIDE of the fins ...oopsy again

So far I have only ridden them in knee high waves ...

but we have a week of onshores and storms forecast , so I will be keeping a weather eye for an offshore hour or two  here and there in the coming week[s]

I have tried 'Surffoils's  'cornchippers' that he posted shots of above in the post preceding this, so it will be interesting to do a comparison . I like how yours screw in , as at some stage I will also try them as wingless 'hockey stick fins' , as I have similar , I could ? possibly do a quad setup

  cheers

  ben

You got a free pair Ben ?

How'd they go with the fins on the inside ?

Considering most people would surf in knee high waves, what did you experience in waves that size ??

hiya Brett !

  thanks for asking

well,  I surfed them for two sessions ,  today

both times , in glassy knee high peaks . NO-ONE else in the water OR on the beach , this morning ... [yahooooo !!!   you gotta LOVE that !!]

  I caught 20 waves this morning , 12 this arvo ...

15 lefts , 17 rights . [but who's counting eh ? :) ]

this time , I had the wings on the OUTSIDE , as in Mark's [wavefin's] photos .

I cut my ankle on the right foot ouch.

but , apart from that ....

on two rights , I was able to do 'Beerfans' quote [ from good ol' Terry Fitzgerald's original comment , about "for most surfers , surfing is mostly ..." ]  ...'two turns and a wipeout'

I'm very pleased to report that the wipeout was a cracker ! [probably the best move I pulled all day ] .... as 'Pottz' said well, back when he was on 'the world tour'....

" IF you can't have a spectacular wave , then at least ...have a spectacular WIPEOUT !!"

anyway , back to your question ...

with the finlet thingy [?"wing"?] on the INSIDE of the hockey stick fins , it felt more like your 'cornchip' one , and also the small curveys I recently made . No ankle injuries . No wiggliness [?word?] . It felt positive and stable on takeoff and bottom turns , and in control on the few off the tops I managed . I like this setup .....

.....'Malaroo', I eagerly await YOUR ride report !!

  cheers !

  ben

hi again Brett !

this was the  back fin setup I used today , as I wanted to feel the side fins more than the back fin . I wanted it to be a bit more like a slightly stabilised twinny with a small 'nubster' type glo fin that I made . It is shown here with the original [?inside out'?] wing positions that I used the other day ...

'wavefin' ...

WHAT back fin[s] have you tried / would you recommend , using a thruster setup , please ?

oh , by the way  mark / ' wavefin' ,

would it be okay to post photos , showing the size of the fin ?  [... it IS patented already , yes ?]

Thanks heaps ! And respect to you , for doing this , and generously sharing it with us , and allowing us to try it out . Good on ya , you're a champ , mate !

cheers !

ben the fin tinkerer ....and "crash test dummy" / test pilot   :)   :)  :)

I hate to be a moaning, winging, misery guts, but over the last two months I got the sickest I have ever been in my life, hopefully coming out of it now … I’ve have test driven the wavefins in my imagination a thousand times …

I had a dream that the wings were two feet long and I was hooting down this long fast overhead wall only on the wingtip, faster than man has ever surfed and I was worried about how to bring the rest of the fin and board into the water without losing it.

Is anyone laughing, I’m so frustrated I’m going mental. Sorry, give me another week or two.

Nice blogspot Mr Chipper, I went right through it, a great night of entertainment and and thanks for your wing fin thread.

you're welcome mala !!

get well soon mate

  cheers

  ben

Ben and Malaroo, if either of you guys dont like the fins, can I send you a Paid post bag and can you send them to me to loan for a month ? Or Cash if you prefer ?

Im keen to try but I want to test ride first-  I want to see how they ride as compared to the CornChippers I made earlier.

The Wavefin fins look hot, I dig the black modern design.

Mal, hope your well and back in the tube soon.

I like them Brett !

I need to surf them in bigger waves , and for a while

but yes , I will take you up on the paid postpak offer [only because at the moment i'm strapped for opostage even ?!].

I certainly couldn't accept any cash for the fins , as wavefin very generously gave them to me free ! As I say ,  if I had the postage money , i wouldn't ask for THAT either , as wavefin paid it all to send me these ...

perhaps if 'mala' is going to be out of the water for a few weeks , you could quickly test his pair ? [provided , of course , that you get in the water soon , mate ??]

I hope to try them out again tomorrow ...'if' the winds are favourable ??  here's hoping !!

  cheers !

  ben

I'd want to borrow them for a full month and chuck them into short boards, mals and some of the funky prone craft Ive got. I want to combine them with a tunnel fin too.

You'll probably love them in bigger waves and wont want to part with them!!!

Might need to buy a pair...

Mala here,

Um! surfoils, I want to keep them at the moment, might get down to the coast within a week. I’m curiouis and pretty determined to give a good report. When I last communicated with wavefin, he was sick too, I notice no response from him in last few days, I hope its not due to illness. Too sick to respond is a worry. I assume you have tried to contact him! Do you know he has his contact details on his website. http://wavefin.com/wavefin/

I’m sure he would send you some overnight … Have I missed something, did he notify us he was going overseas or something?

Tell you what, try and contact him, if he’s away I will send you my set and get another off him next week.

I have sent you a pm with my contact details.
