what exactly is the versatlity of a rounded pin tail? could a 6’1" rounded pin be ridden in chest high surf and still perform? is there any speed lost with the loss of some of the tails planing area? how does it turn compared to a 6’1" squash? any and all information will be greatly apperciated. thanks
turns will be smoother somewhat, and more drawn out…more holding power and less snap. i like them both, but use a round tail on my 6’5" but keep the 6’2" a squash, (with more width and foam) and my boards under that are swallowtails. i think you should keep the rounded pin for slightly bigger and hollower waves, but some guys like them, try to find someone who’ll swap for a few waves.

I have found the rounded pin to be my personal favorite. Like the design on my lb’s as well as with the shrt bd’s. Maybe Dale could make a rounded pin mat! As already stated it gives a smoother feel whith transitions and larger turns which for me is what I like. Some people around here ( Northeast, Maine ) could argue the point of there being no drive out of a turn with a design such as this. Maybe I’m not that sophisticated, but I would like to try a rounded pin with stingers. Have that set up on 2 of my kneeboards , but now I am truly mixing apples and oranges.
dave- you said there is no drive out of the turn on a rounded pin. what if the tail rocker is less? wouldnt this provide the speed?
dave- you said there is no drive out of the turn on a rounded pin. what if > the tail rocker is less? wouldnt this provide the speed? i don’t think i said less drive, but less lift for sure. they fit into the curve of the wave really well when the wave is steep. i’ve never really experimented with low rocker round tails, so i can’t tell you, i always though they were used with slightly more rocker. a real smooth, neutral combo. for the other guy, i saw on www.devsurf.com a winged pintail, check through the boards its there somewhere.
