I like wide boards. They seem to like me too,so im wondering if anyone out there in sways land has done/does wide wide thrusters, specifically in the 6’6’‘-6’10’’ range. Im thinking around the 22’’ mark, with a wide tail ( 16’’ ) and a narrowish nose ( 13-13 1/2" ).From a rough sketch, it looks curvy, but not too curvy, and the widepoint would be fairly close to my front foot, which would help me out, as im a front footer. Any info would be much appreciated and will be thoroughly digested by my brain. Pics would be great too. I remember bert’s sunova that was 23’’ wide, that looked like it would be fast and fun.
Wide boards work great for lesser waves and surfers who have a harder time pumping their board for speed. Funny you mention these sizes, for i made a 6.62216.35 the other day. It works GREAT. Low rocker, 1.85 tail, and 4.50 nose. Bigger rounder rails, but not oversizey… just a bit more volume. Flat bottom, and 2+1 set up, with side fins at 11 off tail, twins, and aimed 25 inches in front of nose, on centre stringer line. have not measured the RIGHT way yet…

Cheers guys.
Being a bigger surfer…I kind of specialize in them. Two of my favorites…one is 6’8’’ 12.5 x 23 x 18 x 3 1/8 the other is 6’6’’ x 16 x 23 x 17. They work pretty well in overhead stuff as well.
rail to rail action is slower more lethargic or requires more input
IME, its a compromise between those pros and cons. Ive made 12 very similar personal boards between 19.25 and 20.5 and Ive become very sensitive to width. The difference between 19.5 and 20.5 is a country mile and I prefer 19.75-20.0 for the all arounder. The loss of rail feel is a real bummer for me…even with my big-ass 11 foot.
Thanks for the replies guys, i think width works well for a good 95% of the waves i surf, mostly knee to a bit oh, and the last few boards i’ve shaped have been 20.5", which is still good, but i think i can go wider again. I’d probably go out to 6’10’', so the outline curve isnt too radical.
The beast is surely that, a beast!!, You’d catch a tonne of waves on that thing!!.
Always thinking about what would work in the waves we get. Still think my twin keel is unreal, but im trying to learn to ride back foot boards, ie thruster shapes. Solo, i do have a nugget inspired shape, but the rocker is all wrong, as its 6’5’‘, cut down from a 7’5’’ blank ( i made a mistake so im trying to salvage it ). I think the widepoint is 4’’ below centre, 16+ tail, 20 wide 13’’ nose. I like the board on the left in your post.
