Checked out your website. I am waiting to see or hear some more. Were you at Taylor camp? Watch your step, you are walking where you might not be welcome! Draft dodgers do not walk with Vets! What do you know about Vietnam or the war? Wood_Ogre
Hey! Bush and Cheney don’t post here! WTF?
Watch your step, you are walking where you might not be welcome! Draft dodgers do not walk with Vets!
Wasn’t in the War. But my father was.
Is that a picture of you Ogre?
Did you surf in Nam?
We could use as many images as possible to help illustrate the documentary.
What do I know? Not much by way of experience there, as I was only 3 yrs old at the time. Am trying to learn lots and am doing so as we move forward with the film.
Kindest,

yeahguy. Please thank your father for his service to our country from me. Surfers who fought and coped in VN might be an interesting movie. Looks like you have a political agenda, though. Too bad. Mike
“Point of view” is the proper term, (unless he’s running for office or trying to get some backing from the government and I missed it) and this IS America, where a point of view is legal to have and to express. We can thank our vets for that and use it.
yeahguy, looks interesting.
Greg
And
“THANKS”
To the blackbook vets that trained Cambodian post war rebels to end the violence there,as well as going back into Vietnam to rescue MIAs.Herb
I’m showing my age… I remember Chu Lai but don’t remember their being much surf on the South China Sea. Water and beaches were great however. As a “grunt” we didn’t have much time for recreation other than dodging bullets… something I should have learned to do better!

Maybe get in touch with Pat Farley, he wrote “Surfing to Saigon” about growing up in Santa Cruz and serving in Vietnam. Pat is a great guy- I have nothing but respect for him.
Here’s his website: http://www.surfingtosaigon.com/index.html
Buy and read his book.
To all who served- thanks!
Pat is one of our main interviewees for the movie. Hi story is well represented.
When telling the story of vietnam war and surfers you generaly have tow camps; those who went and those who evaded.
The documentary mainly follows the life experiences of one surfer who went (Pat F.) and one surfer who didn’t.
Thanks!
Outstanding!
From one vet to another, old and new thank you for your service. I currently have 19.5 years on active duty with the Air Force and am know sitting at my Dads computer in So. Cal enjoying my Christmas vacation and really contemplating retirement and returning to So. Cal in 6 more months. On the way out here I ran into two Army guys and one Air Force in the airport in their utilities. Hoping they were on there way home I asked them where they were headed. Iraq was the answer. The air Force guy was given a two week notice he was headed for Iraq; no Christmas with his family this year. Gentlemen as a service member and a vet I ask we all say a prayer of thanks for all vets and one for the ones who are in harms way at this moment.
yeahguy65. Yes that is a picture of Wood_Ogre at China Beach in 1968. I surfed a couple times then, Did the salvage diving on the Red Beach causeway in August 1968 and that was one of the places I surfed. Went to Vietnam in 1996 and have spent 7 months a year working there. Have a home in Hue and have explored the coast of Vietnam from Danang to Dong Ha and have surfed some places but mostly interested in kite surfing there now. Surf is seasonal depending on the storms in the south china sea. Kite surfing is more predictable and can be very good in the winter, Nov to march. Have been arrested a couple times by the police for being in un authorized areas. Most places in Vietnam they have never seen surfing or kite surfing. Once had the police try to take my kite away when I came in to the beach. Got into a pushing match and finally gave him the bar. He got 50 feet of air before crashing into the bushes. Ha! that was some sight!!
Red Beach causeway July 1968
Great Effort!!!
I say thanks on behalf of my Dad, don’t forget the Aussies who were there as well…
Messed up a lot of people’s heads and families…
Respect…
Looking forward to the full movie…
Wood_Ogre at home long ago and far away!
Messin with pictures sure is fun! I like the big pictures! Dam that sand was white!! And the water warm too!!
Hicksy, your Aussie brothers are not forgotten. From Vietnam to the Gulf war, the Aussies were there! This is something every US serviceman knows well.
thank you for your service
Ditto. Happy Holidays to you.
scott: yes please, i’m keen to see the trailer.
i believe it’s essential for the wellbeing of surfing to have surf filmmakers who are willing to explore important themes in their work, rather than just good waves
being ridden well.
i look forward to watching your film one day. i’m sure i’m not the only one on sways who’d like to hear of its progress.
interesting topic to raise it’s ugly head during christmas----i was in the zone 1968-69–running ‘errands’ for air america then—got a few waves in the cam ra bay area----wasn’t a high point of my life–had a board ferried in from Oz by some air force guys for the cost of a couple of bottles of whiskey…ah well, if you were there , you were there…have a great day
