Vintage Hansen Longboard Questions

Hey folks!

I recently bought a vintage 9’10 Hansen longboard and I’m trying to learn a little more about it. It seems to be in fairly good condition for a board it’s age; several minor repairs on the rails, one decent size repair toward the nose of the deck (pretty crappy job, unfortunately) and the fin has clearly been re-glassed in. No delamination and not even many dents.

The two main things I’d like to find out:

  1. What’s the age? I’m assuming mid 60s, but any identifiers are completely covered by repairs/paint.

  2. Paint job is confusing…doesn’t seem original to me, but looks like it’s under resin? What’s confusing to me is that there are scratches in the paint that don’t appear to break the glass at all, and almost have the look of a scratched epoxy board? Tried to include pictures to describe what I’m talking about. Hopefully someone can shed some light as to what I’m looking at.

Looked pretty hard for any identifiers, as I’ve seen in other posts, but couldn’t see any…

Thanks for any insights!

Can you tell if that’s paint, or resin? Looks like someone did a lousy job of covering up the ugly bits. If you were to sand off all of the white and red stuff, I think you’d find significant damage and stains. I hope you did not pay a lot.

Few mid 60s boards had color jobs that covered the stringer. That is why I suspect there’s been some masking of ugliness. If you can remove the red stuff over the talblock, deck side, you might find a serial number.

Thanks for the reply, SammyA

That’s a good question, hadn’t thought that it might be resin iteself, I’ll have to take a closer look. I do agree, I can see some dark spots underneath (I think visible in a couple of the pictures too), so I’m assuming it’s a cover-up job. I paid $360, thinking it was a decent price for a vintage, water tight board…bad deal? Planning on surfing it, as opposed to hanging, so I’m in it for the classic-ness.

Thanks!
