Vintage Hollow Wood Paddleboard, Tom Blake?

I have a few pics here of a hollow wood paddleboard that belongs to a friend. This jewel has been very well taken care of. So on behalf of the owner, I’m just going to put this out there and see if anyone has some info they can relate. I’m not sure what these things are worth, but that too would be interesting feedback from you guys.

Identifying marks on the board are “52”, and “GPF” 1952? and someones initials possibly? The initials are a bit hard to read, so there could an error there.

Other than that, this board was obtained in SoCal I do believe.

Enjoy the pictures, and thank you in advance for all responses and information!

I’ll bet that was built on the Popular Mechanix Blake plans. It was common in many school districts for the wood shop classes to offer the project. I saw several built in the early to mid 1950’s, in the San Diego schools. Nice looking board.

Can you get a pic of the initials etc…

Nice board, how much does it weighs? I’ve been thinking in building one…

Nice beetle behind, BTW!

The initials don’t show up in a picture too well.

Thanks for chiming in Bill T. I thought you’d have some expertise on this.

What would be considered fair market value on something like this?

I agree… looks like a kook box probably made from Popular Mechanics (July '37) Plans…

To give you a gauge there was a Mint Tom Blake sold at auction for $32,000 so that is probably close to the top end for these boards.

If you look at the various surf auctions kook boxes can fetch a couple grand if they are in good original condition.

A couple years back I picked up a Tom Blake Catalina for under 2K but it was in bad shape plus Catalina was really the least desired of the 4 major builders as I think they got into it later in the game and the quality just was not there - Think the owner of Catalina even shot himself. Anyway mine was in terrible shape so I did not feel bad about doing a restore on it… Really love the way it came out and now hangs in the house so to me it is priceless but on the open market I would have to guess the 8k range. There are a couple paddle boards on the current usvsa auction (A Rogers and a Catalina) be interesting to see what these go for. If the Rogers in original and in great shape it should fetch a nice price.

Tyson,

I’ve seen vintage no name paddleboards, that were basket cases, sell for $400 to $800 dollars. Good ones in the $1,000 to $5,000 dollar range. However, in the current economy, who knows? You have a good example of a 40’s/50’s vintage paddleboard, that appears to be in excellent condition. You should be able to get top dollar, whatever that is, these days. Take your time selling it.
