Sorry guys if this has been answered before. I have done some research and I’m just a little unsure of the exact amounts.
I’m not getting much help from the people I bought it from. Been my first board and happy with the shaping I have done, I’d hate to blow it here becasue I didnt ask.
So, I was sent Surfboard Polyester Laminating Resin, Wax in Styrene and Sun Cure Catalyst Powder.
I was supplied instructions for the sun cure at thats all good. I use a 1% ratio with the resin.
In regards to the hot coat, am I ok to use the same Surfboard Laminating Resin? And how much Wax in Styrene do i use ratio wise? I read 1 shot to each oz, which in Australia is 30ml to a litre.
Also, if I choose to do a gloss coat (i know I shouldn’t) but for education is the same resin ok? And is there a different ratio for Wax in Styrene?
I hope I’m on the right track here. And thanks for your help…Again!
Hey Dallas for the ratios its pretty much use 1mm for every 50mm of resin. Laminating Resin can be turned into hotcoat resin with the wax in styrene. Gloss resin isnt the same and I think it is thinned to go on wafer thin. Theres alot more work that goes into a gloss than you think. For a newby hotcoat your board, sand it all to shape then rehotcoat again using your same mixture. Makes it alot easier to get rid of weave marks and mistakes.
sounds like your on the right track just remember if your going to use suncure you have to put a little bit of catalissed resin under decals otherwise it wont go off under decals or float them on later just remember its all about having a go and you can fix just about anything especially with the help of swaylock,s cheers ra
Dallasf, are you in Oz? If so shoot me a PM. Ratio of catalyst and wax in styrene goes on the percentage weight of the resin used and ambient temperature, don’t go on mm! Sorry Zac, not being a smart arse, but this is a tried and true technique.
Agreed on the fact that catalyst amount is temperature dependent. There is no hard and fast percentage for catalyst ratio since ambient temp will greatly affect how a batch goes off. And no, gloss resin isn’t the same as lam/hot coat resin.
Zackoopman has the right idea. I would hot coat once, sand it all properly, then do a second coat with a tad more styrene/wax additive. The added styrene will thin the resin and it will flow a bit better. Sort of a “poor man’s” gloss coat.
Hey dallas. You got good advice above. Are you uncomfortable mixing all the ratios? This is what I do for a hot coat(fill coat for you guys down under). I put a capfull of surfacing agent into my 14-16 0z. of laminating resin to make sanding resin. Never had a problem with this. Squirt a bit of catalyst in it even tho it’s suncure. Mix it all up really well. Paint it on. Wait a couple of minutes for the wax to rise. Flash it in the sun for about 30 seconds. Bring it back into the shade for a minute. Take it back into the sun until it’s hard. Mike
