VIRUS ALERT: Did Hobie.com send me a computer killer?

ditto that

Having a decidely paranoid component to my personality and having been infected once or twice, I try to stay up on this stuff. It’s an ongoing battle…

I use Symantec (Norton) anti-virus and forewall which are updated frequently. Also scan my computer regularly using “Spybot” and “Adaware.”

Still picked up a bug of some type listed as “Trojan-gen {other}” which was missed by all of the above but picked up by a new program I recently installed called “Avast!” Technically not a virus but more of a spyware application.

Seems like none of them pick up everything and I’ve heard Norton has been specifically targeted by hacks so it may have some vulnerabilities.

Microsoft is continuously providing updates and patches for known security flaws in Windows, but you have to tap in and download them.

It’s a crazy network out there!

I use a Mac or linux.

And spend my time using the computer instead of protecting it and cleaning it.

I hate hackers!

Someday they will go to jail for their hacking of our personal, private computers.

I hate spam.

I hate pop up windows.

I hate disabled back buttons on browsers.

Leave MY computer alone.

And the worst is Spyware. They hack into your computer to track your every move and then either steal your information, or sell it.

Death to hackers! They are the Surftech of the computer world.

Howzit John, I have Norton and AVG 7 Pro, the AVG tends to find viruses that Norton doesn’t. AVG also has a free version 6 that finds things that Norton doesn’t, and you can down load a free trial of the 7 for 30 days. If any one is interested you can get these apps at www.grisoft.com , Aloha and safe computing, Kokua

Hi Kokua -

I checked the AVG site’s virus encyclopedia (including aliases) and couldn’t find

“Win32: trojan-gen {other}” - Pest Patrol and Avast supposedly pick it up but I’m not really sure if it’s a virus vs spyware or what.

I know my firewall was lighting up a lot when I had it.

Yo Herb have you been paddling out to “point porn” again?.I have this thing called “Spybot Search and Destroy” that works pretty good for Spyware and Adware. Its free too.

Howzit Mr.Clean, I use Spybot also, It’s a really good program. I guess if you send them a donation it helps them to improve the program. Aloha, Kokua

Howzit John, seems like there are a few anti virus programs better than Norton, I’ve heard of those 2 programs but never looked into them, but the AVG7 pro works really good. Did you try notifying them about that virus you mentioned, they usually are pretty fast about updating on new viruses when informed of them. My neighbor just got DSL and didn’t have a firewall and got hit really bad by a couple of viruses and since they don’t maintain their computer I’m helping them get it together. Aloha, Kokua

After reading Herb’s problem, I went into my computer and found PWS-Narod trojan. It had been shutting it’s self off when I hit the enter key to open a window. Last year when my 15 year old daughter was visiting from Fla., she was on my computer 20 hours a day, it got in such bad shape from her going to a gazillion teen chat, blah, blah site. I had 1589 infected files and I have McAffee, she downloaded anything from other teens
