…I received 5 emails in the last 4 days w/ the Trojan Horse virus.
…The emails that were to be return addresses are actually lauching pads for this. This means that these computers/email addresses are already infected and are now spreading the virus to others without the owners knowledge, and /or to cover-up the true location/orgin of the virus. A short list below of addresses used to send the virus to me.
…Michael Williams
…Hobie.com
…Scheodel surfboards
…and my old email address spitzer3@gateway which has been discontinued for more than 2 years.
…There was one more ,but it self destructed before I got to it(weird).
…I have no doubt that my new address is/or might be used to pass this virus.
…It took me a few hours to clean-up the mess, but it could have been much worse. This virus is not intented to distrupt your use of your computer as much as it is to steal your personnal information from your hard drive. Can you say Id theft.
I think it was about 3 weeks or so ago that I recieved an email from one of you old email addresses that had a virus attached. I didn’t open the email and as a result I remained unscathed but these day you just can’t be too careful. Having a good anti virus on your pc is pretty damn important. Norton’s pretty hard to beat. Frankly I’d suggest it for everyone.
Herb you already have a virus/ or some form of spyware on your PC, Its reading emails off sites that you have visited and using them against you, or a keystroke virus if you typed any of those emails.
Go get SPYBOT or if you want I will send you a copy. PM me and Send me your address.
I had the same issue, I was getting emails to from my own web account.
like HR@f1surf.com etc. I was like WTF?? but spybot wiped it out
Howzit Herb, That e-mail I sent you turned out to be a virus hoax. It got people to delete a file unnecessarily, which only affected people who write java code. You are talking about the jdbgmgr.exe virus hoax I take it, that’s the one I sent you the e-mail about, any other virus I have no knowledge of. But here’s a trick to keep any trojan horse viruses from spreading from your computer. Make up a fake e-maill address like aaaaa@aaaaa.com , that should put it at the top of your address book and when a trojan tries to spread it gets a message back that wil stop it in it’s tracks. I actuallly put 2 fakes at the top and 2 at the bottom to bookend my address book. Now even if I get a trojan it can’t spread. But in this day and age of viruses some one maybe able to over ride that fix. Sorry if I scared you, but the fix I sent only would take about 5 minutes to do. Aloha, Kokua
Herb, The virus hoax I e-mailed you about was undetectable by Norton and Mcafee. I run my virus progam at startup every day and it never found it. There's an free anti virus program download at grisoft.com that finds some viruses that neither Norton or Mcafee finds, It's AVG 6. and they also have a pro version 7 that you can download for a 30day trial that I tried and bought. I'm now running Norton's firewall pro( gotta have a firewall with DSL) and the AVG 7 pro and Norton systems works antivirus. Talk about over kill but why take any chances. By the way I got the jdbgmgr Virus in April and it never did any harm to my computer. Aloha, Kokua(aka mike williams)
…My anti-virus would not have automatically activated if it was a hoax( this is about the other 4 emails not necessarily your’s ).Thanks for the info. anyway Mike.Herb
…My anti-virus programs are set-up by a tech who comes by every month. It catches everthing,It also makes my comp hard to use at times.
…My wife uses this comp for her business so she took it over when we switched from Earthlink to DSL.It’s basically her deal,I’m just a + one.
…As far as what I have in firewalls,etc. I don’t really have a technical clue,It changes/up-grades monthly.I just have a gross knoweledge of what’s going on here.
…All I know is with 4 other alerts there’s something/someone trying real hard at getting into my drives.Herb
Herb , about those old ISP accounts, even after you cancel with them your e-mail address is still on their website. I canceled my old account over amonth ago but I can go to their website and there’s new e-mail ( spam) still being sent to my account there and if I want I can open them, but I just delete everything. I’d love to get my hands on these guys who think it’s funny to write these viruses. Aloha and safe computing, Kokua
Herb, if you deleted the e-mail I sent you about the jdbgmgr virus then you didn’t read it was a hoax. I’m going to post the link at Symantic so you can read about it if you want. I use my anti-virus up date every day just to be safe. Aloha, Kokua
…Actually, all the email addresses used to send this/these virus was not in my address book and/or I never used/or heard of them til now(w/ the exception of Mike’s and my old job).
…BY-THE-WAY,I got another one while posting here during this thread was building.Herb
Herb, Are you getting alerts which asks if you want to allow or block, I get them and when I run a trace they are coming from all over the world. Kokua
Herb, I’ve never had my firewall turn off my computer and I don’t think it’s supposed to. I get alerts even when my anti virus website wants to update info. I think it about how we configure the fire wall, talk to you tech guy about it. Kokua
the spam buisness (if you can call it that) are propably messing around again. The virus(or the mail for that matter) does not necceserily come from Hobie.com or whatever it say, the spammers just pick a name from their address list as the sender. This is ofcourse automated. Sometimes it uses an address they got from the same site as they found the address they want to send it too so they can find a thrustworthy sender address. I sometimes get ‘rebounds’ from emails sent in my name. Sometimes the spammers are infected with a virus(no wonder…) and you get shit togeter with the spam.
Norton have had problems with finding some viruses in the past, I’ve had no problems with it lately. But you need the latest updates. My father in law just got a virus the day after it was discovered by Norton, obviously he hadn’t updated.
DO NOT LEAVE YOU EMAIL ADDRESS ON ANY WEBPAGE OR IN A DISCUSSION FORUM(like swaylocks). That is unless you want to test your spam filter. Spammer have programs that scan webpages for email addresses and put them in their addresslist. In swaylocks, use a private message instead.
Four the past two months I’ve been getting these Nesky worm type attachments. I’ve got McAffe Security center with anti-spam, anti-virus and a firewall. There are probably 20 attacks a day. Most of the attacks get caught. But, if I see an attachment I’m not expecting it gets deleted and my waste basket gets emptied immediatley. I scan my hard drive twice a week and still find adware, spyware and regularly. What a waste of time and effort.
