I have heard recently from many sources the Volan cloth is no longer being manufactured due to environmental reasons. Can anybody confirm this??? Apparently Burfords has been selling out their stocks and that is the last of it. IS THIS TRUE?
DuPont has made no mention of volan being removed from production, so i’m going to assume that this is just rumor.
and BGF still lists it as a standard finish, #504 “Volan Chrome complex finish compatible with polyester and epoxy resins.”
certainly chromium is not one of the nicest chemicals in the world, though. Particularly the hexavalent form. See e.g. http://www.lenntech.com/Periodic-chart-elements/Cr-en.htm
I heard a couple years ago that this would come to pass. Volan contains heavy metals that are on the EPA hit list. Perhaps this is finally happening.
and there’s worse stuff in Volan, too…like hydrochloric acid!!!..but it never stopped 'em before.
if it’s true i hope not, i will be buying up a sh!t load. one for a longboard normal shape and then a Da cat replica.

Yes some of it is going away. For instance, Bay Mills (BTI) is doing away with their Volan. This is one of the favorites for Volan surfboard finishes.
Thats what it must be then as Burfords distributes Bay Mills in Aust. Maybe they can just find another supplier.
Perhaps as all rumours grow in this industry they are more based on fiction than fact. This is the reliable factor!
