So ive been doing these volan inlays on a couple of my boards and love the simple contrast they give to the normal e-glass. Was hoping to use some green resin (not blued) if that makes sense to try get the patches to have that old school green colour. Is there anything I should know about this green resin thats different to the blue. I.e do i have to cut lap the green resin even with a 4 oz overlap ?
adding tint or using the 249-a? The 249-a will not really be green when cured but it does yellow easier ime. The laps will disappear. If adding tint to achieve the look of volan treated glass I would def cutlap.
A tiny drop of black pigment to the green tint provides the gray hue of volan. It’s very light and transparent in the bucket, so test it out on scrap cloth (over clean foam) before catalyzing.
love that old school look with the volan patch. i’m gearing up to do a longboard for my dad’s birthday present in april. it’ll be my first solo build from home. hoping to do a mexican blanket cut lap for the bottom and a resin tint with acrylic pinline for the deck. i’m contemplating doing a wooden tailblock and matching fin; but, we’ll see if that’s biting off too much. go big or go home right?!?!
to you and all the others out there in swayland, if i were doing a cherry red resin tint on the deck would a volan patch be pointless (aesthetically speaking), would it stand out?
good luck with your work. love what i’ve seen so far.
Yeah cool I thought about adding some tint but was hoping to get away with a free lap , and just using the the old school resin to bring up the volan patch on the deck. I really like the colour on this cooper “flex pig” and was told by an old time glasser its just the resin that creates the colour in the volan. With the green creating a different hue to the blue.
I can still get the old style resin so I guess ill just have to do some experiments.
I think a wooden tailblock would be abit much. I’ve never done one but they look very tricky getting all that foam and wood to blend. The pros make it look easy. In regards to the volan showing up any type of glass will show up as the areas with more layers get a deeper shade of your tint. For your first board i think 4oz would be best as its easier to saturate. I would do 2 layers of 4 oz and then you can cut out your inlay between the bottom and top layer.
Zack, The greenish color is the volan cloth like Barry said, not due to the color of resin used. With Gene’s flex pig he uses a flat weave volan cloth and isophthalic resin. The iso resin has almost a light brownish type hue to it.
