Volan glassing layup for 8 ft min mal/mid length

Hi
I am making my first board, which will be in volan.
I am:

  • beginner/inter
  • will surf beach and point break when good: up to and including overhead.
  • 100kg 40yr old male
    The board will be:
  • Mini mal/midlegth outline with flat rocker
  • 8 or 8’2 x 22 1/2 x 3 or 3 1/4
  • 60 - 65 Litres
  • Epoxy resin
  • PU blank with small wood stringer (unsure on type)

I have 6oz volan already: I was going to glass it: 6 x 6 x 6 all in volan with tail patch.

I am now thinking that I want more glassing to add strength and stiffness - I want this board to be a keeper ‘forever’ and I am prepared to forego the ‘performance’ … I am a 100kg 40 yr old begin/inter after all.
That said:

Option 1:

  • Bottom: 7.5oz volan with tail patch (6oz volan)
  • Deck: 7.5oz volan (on outside/top layer) and 3/4 deck patch (6oz volan)

Option 2:

  • Bottom: 6oz volan and 6oz volan tail patch and 4 or 6oz e-glass: not sure if the e-glass or volan would be the outside/top layer.
  • Deck: 6oz volan x 6oz volan deck patch and 4 or 6oz e-glass: again, not sure if the e-glass or volan would be the outside/top layer.

Option 3: Scrap the Volan idea altogether.

  • Bottom: 4x4 e-glass (or 4x6 or 6x6)
  • Deck: 4x4x4 e-glass (or one or two of these being 6)

Your thoughts experts.
Regards

It’s been a minute since I have glassed on a board. Working on the boat, I got used to making stuff with 2-3-4 layers x 25oz/sqyard stitch mat (1708).

Have you glassed anything before? Are you thinking free laps or cut laps or any sort of color work?

Some folks like the clearer Silane treated cloth. I think the green Volan (chromate) treatment looks neat. Laps and patches will be more visible with Volan.

I have just done my board repairs before.
I don’t think it will be a problem.
I have done much research.

I like cut laps.
I like Volan and want to use that.
And I like the idea and look or Volan with 3/4 deck and butterfly tail patches.
If I use Volan I won’t use a resin tint or spray paint the blank.
