when glassing the top of a 10’er with 2 layers of 8oz volan and a light blue transparent tint, will the inner layer that is cut a few inches from the outline of the rail show its edge in the final glass?? I wish that I could describe this better. I do know that each layer of volan adds a slightly deeper shade of color, so I am wondering what will happen with the edge considering the light blue tint. Any help is greatly appreciated Drew

You might try going with the full overlap on both layers. Or, laminate the inner layer first - mask/trim it right at the overlap from the bottom, then do the outer layer with the full overlap. With volan cloth (even without tinted resin) the natural tint of the cloth results in visible edges. Tinted lam resin makes this even more obvious. Also, be prepared for a deeper tint where the deck lams cover the trim line from the bottom. Careful treatment of that overlap “step” will reduce this, but even pro boards glassed this way often have that deeper tint along the trim line. It is covered usually with pinlines.
Good advice man! I thought about doing the full overlap with both layers. I imagine this would make for some damn fine strong rails. Have you ever done this before? The deeper shade on the rails is the look taht I was going for in the first place, so I also imagine that wrapping both layers would heighten this effect. Thanks again.
if doing a deck and bottom with tinted lam. resin… the deck layers lapping under must be cut exactly, or close? must you tape off for the deck layers the same way you would for a bottom tinted lam? confusing yet? is there any way to blend the lines?
I almost always do the double layer overlap. I generally don’t use volan though (I bought a roll of silane I’m trying to use up.) Tints are hard to get even and with a double overlap, I would consider using UV resin to allow plenty of time to get it right.

Yes, the tape and cut lines should be as clean as possible. When you do the deck, mask off the bottom the same way - the tape layout is important and when you cut the overlap, don’t cut into the bottom lam. I lift the tape and excess glass as I cut with a razor blade before it gets rock hard. I’m not sure what you mean by “blend the lines.”
