Why is it so hard to get a shaper to do the right volume? Please help…
Did you bring your old board to show them what you wanted?
Every shaper shapes a little different. Deck roll and the foil at the nose and tail as well as rail volume and shape can vary.
I was looking for a more elaborated answer, if I could shape a board myself, I would not pay top dollars to prestigious shapers. I was hoping for some advice on how to explain what I want so the shaper can understand better and maybe get the volume right.

Read my post. Its very difficult to accurately in words describe exactly what you want…i mean it could be possible if you had a mathmatecal formula or you could speak in G-code.
No, I did not bring any boards to show the shaper, that is the problem. I’m from Central America and I order boards from shapers in the U.S.A. So all the comunication is done by e-mail or phone.

okay then its almost impossible. If you stay with the same shaper for several boards and have good communication over the phone then you could use the first board as a reference and work with your shaper to make adjustments from there.
Do you have any shapers where you are? Perhaps, if you do, you could be there with the shaper, pay him small dollars and get it the way you want it.
PS Judging from what I hear, prestigious shapers will be leaving the US to avoid laws against the use of polyester resin. Maybe some will come to your area?
Thanks for the advice, it’s just frustrating sometimes, since it takes so long to get boards (sometimes two or three months) and there is no shapers here where I live. I recentently order four boards to go to Indo and all came pretty thick or thicker than I expected, so had to take those boards because I had no time to order more.
there leaving because the outlaw of polyester?..damn it this must be california…it causes cancer…everything causes cancer. i have christmas lights that cause cancer in california…a sander that causes cancer in california…almost everything in the world causes cancer in california…i think california causes cancer ,damn it.
mmm it seems you have a worldwide problem… my first advice is stick to one shaper, secondly the length width thickness measurements are a sketch… a vaugue description…there is so many other variables from shaper to shaper to designer… why did you buy board from usa and wait for three months etc when there is over 36 board shops in bali selling new boards from $450-650aud? you can just choose from the shelf quality boards made for bali conditions. in fact you can order board 3-4 weeks ahead of your trip and have them sent from australia custom and waiting for you for $650aud.
This trip I did not go to Bali, I went straight to Mentawai’s. Not really many boards for sale in Padang like there is in Bali. Ordering boards ahead of time to pick up in Bali sounds like a good idea…The only problem is to arrive in Indo a no boards.
I think it (banning polyester resin or at least putting strict controls on its use) has more to do with air quality than anything else. In case you hadn’t noticed So Cal has a prolem with smog and cars are not the only culprit. I even read somewhere that lawnmowers and backyard barbies are prime offenders but really anything that puts chemicals into the air that can then react with sunlight produces what is know as photochemical smog, which is really nasty stuff. Living in the LA basin is supposedly the equivalent of smoking a pack of cancer sticks per day!
“Why is it so hard to get a shaper to do the right volume?”
Probably because you didn’t ask or specify.
Also Rail Volume can be a slighty vague term and subject to a little interpretation.
Or maybe he just f_cked up.
If youre really picky, then you can measure the thickness along the rail X-section and specify. In 0.5 inch increments starting at the rail apex. But this wont say much about rail shape. I like to work with Raddi myself.
Another method is to reference common objects…“make me a rail with outer volume similar to a golf ball with the deck crowned right into it”
Finally, there are these tools called “contour guages” that can be purchased at Home Depot in the States that will let you copy exactly the rail shape/volume onto a sheet of paper. Costs about $6.
What do you mean you can’t shape a board? I thought that for thirty years before I tried it. Here’s a dirty little secret. You CAN shape and glass your own board. If I can do it so can you(some may argue that I still can’t). If you can order a finished board, could you not also order materials? I hate it when I agree with Roy. There does seem to be a bit of cancer here in Calif. Currently, 4 members of my family makin the fight(One lives in Pennslyvania. Is it a canerous State, too?) Mike
exactly…everything causes cancer…smoking a ciggerate with resin on my hands proballay dosent help…i knew a lady that died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in her life…if i stop smoking and drinking etc.,soon i might get run over by a beer truck while im crossing the road…now back to your discussion…if you have to try shaping one or a couple yourself…maybe only you can get the rails you want, even if you gotta take it to someone to glass
