Volume Increase

Hello

I have a 9’6"x23"x3" PU shaped blank that I bought at a garage sale. I entered the shape on AKU and came up with about 76 liters. I would like it to be about 90 liters. Is there any way to increase the volume of a blank? I am envisioning laminating a 1/2" layer of foam onto the bottom or maybe 1/4" top and bottom. Problem is I don’t know where to get sheets of foam that thin.

I am planning a glassing schedule of 6,6,6 top and 6,6 bottom using RR epoxy.

Any suggestions are appreciated

Thanks in Advance

Dennis

I was going to say boxier rails but if it’s shaped then it’s pretty much a done deal unless you want to go thinner.

Go wider not thicker. With that glassing schedule a wooden stringer is not necessary. So cut(not hot wire) on both sides of the stringer and add 3" of 2lb eps or denser foam. glue it up and double stringer with 1/8" d-cell, corcell or herex to make pruddy and to make it easier to shape the new foam to the blank’s original rocker shape.

Also consider selling it, because a pu blank that size that is decently shaped is worth at least $200 which would give you the money to buy the volume EPS blank you desire.

Just out of curiosity, are you a very large person that the 76 liters wouldn’t float you? That is already a big board for a 250 pounder.

OTAY’s comment, and recommendation, is bang-on. Worth paying attention to.

Ditto. Bang on. Must admit.

have you think about “projected polyurethane” over the blank??

Not a big guy. 5’10", 180 lbs of out of shape, with a shoulder injury 50 year old guy . I surf mostly Bolinas, CA; really soft mushy waves so I am looking for a wave catching machine. I have a 76 liter board now that is not quite enough. If anyone has recommendations for sizes and shapes for me I would be glad to hear them.

I think I will go ahead and finish the board as is (it is well shaped) for the glassing practice and either give it to my kid (who doesn’t need it) or sell it for the cost of materials. If I give it to my kid I will stick with the above glassing schedule (he’s pretty hard on boards) if I sell it I will lighten it up a bit to conserve money.

Does “projected polyurethane” mean sprayed?

Thanks to All

I’m no expert, but comparing this board to another board solely on volume alone is pointless. So many other things come into play. How similar is this “other 76 liter board” to the current blank? I would think that with the existing board dims and your height/weight, you’d have plenty of board under you given that it’s properly shaped towards how/where you want to surf it. Any chance you could post pictures of this blank?
