W.A.V.E. Set fin repairs.

Any ideal of adhesives that could be used to repair Polyethelene and Lexan fins??

hi mc !

not sure what it is called in the states,

but on a lexan fin of mine , I have used tarzan’s grip…

and on a polyCARBONATE one , supa glue …

[I am not sure how polyethylene compares to polycarbonate , though, sorry]…

hope this helps ?

cheers !

THanks Chip,

I figured I’d have to try something like this.

How did the glues work?

I’m hoping to re-use the fins not just display them.

Hey Mc,

sorry to say I’m pretty sure you’re S.O.L. Fins made from laminated panels can be repair fairly well but Polyethylene and polycarbonate do glue back together very well.

Cheers, Rich

That’s what I thhought but I was hoping for some Sway-Magic…

Thanks

Not sure if this about trying out the fin template or just using the boards. I’ve had pretty good luck molding obsolete bases onto more modern fins. Tape up the WAVE Set box carefully with good masking tape. Using glass strands, chopped cloth and epoxy I’ve then set a fiberglass fin in the cavity and square it all up as needed, then top off the mold. Once it sets up overnight I tapped the fin/base out of the box with a rubber mallet from the tip of the trailing edge. Redrill the mounting holes and clean up the molded base.

Another option I did read about here in the archives.

On an old Yater I have that used the wonderbolt system I took a FIns Unlimited box and routered it down to fit in the board’s fin slot. I might try to modify a 14" FU windsurf box to see if this might work.

the lexan one I am still using all the time . Both the supa glues seem to work on those , tarzan’s grip and selleys [might be the same or similar chemicals in both makes eh ? …I will have to check one day , I guess]

The polycarbonate one I reglued …twice… then bit the bullet , spent $29aus, and bought a new one instead .

I’m not sure , what does ‘S.O.L.’ stand for , Rich ? [from your post , I couldn’t tell if you were saying polyethelene does , or does NOT , glue back together well , sorry]

 cheers
